Well, the configurator is now live on Mazda's site and..

... apart from white, every single "colour" (read: shade of grey) is a £540 "option" - or you can have the red for £660.

WTF! Suddenly those prices don't look that great.

And *still* no performance figures anywhere to be seen...
They're on the configurator when you select the engine size. 8.3 for the dash on the 1.5 and 7.3 for the 2.0

ETA: just spotted a comedy configurator combination - "vehicles with sport tan leather must also be fitted with navigation [...] and is not removable". WTF is that all about.
The marketing people have decided that the majority of people who pick 'sport tan leather' will also pick the navigation so all cars will be built with both as standard.

Due to the lead times of them being build in Japan, they cant offer a wide range of option combinations like manufacturers with a plant in Europe.

If I could have an LSD I'd happily drop 0.7 on the 0-60 (compared to my NC2) for a leaner vehicle.

If there's demand, I suspect within months of release LSD will be available from aftermarket tuners.
Like turbo/SC for the BRZ/GT86.

Base model 1.5 for me in grey and its over £19k, is this too expensive or is it just my skewed view of the world?

If the price is an issue, give it a year and there'll be decent discounts to be had. Early adopters always pay a premium. Mostly. biggrin

Nots sure why anyone would be surprised at the only 160 bhp thing, the MX5 is a package that fills a niche that it has largely to itself, add more power and it gets faster, but it also gets heavier and more expensive, I like Mazda adhering to the original concept and not trying to make something that ballistically fast, people who want that aren't really the MX5s target market.

It is refreshing that we can still buy something like this in world of 500 bhp plus SUV's.

I am sure the aftermarket will cater for perhaps 200 - 250 bhp but its down to enjoying the drive and not just Top Trumps, roof down alone is worth 50 bhp in the enjoyment stakes.

+1 The Mx-5 is the worlds best selling sportscar. Mazda would be crazy to change the successful formula.

It's odd that you cannot get the gunmetal alloys on the top spec model.

Maybe the options will become more flexible as time passes.

But what other RWD, 2 seater convertible can you buy new for £19k?

It seems the Mazda has got the market all to themselves at the moment, I can't think of anything else until you get to the base model BMW z4 but that's £28000 for 1.8i which is slower than the 2.0 mx5.

The only alternative (when it finally gets unveiled) will be the Fiat version of this car.

Really like the car and will seriously consider one in a couple of years, but only once some ltd editions come out with more inspiring colours than the dull monochrome crap (plus red) that's available now.

I wonder what colour options the US (their configurator will be available next week), Continental Europe and Japan will get, I bet at least yellow, bright blue and green will be available in other markets.

Toad puts serious head on for once and hops in.

Clearly all of this is subject to change by Mazda UK but would appear to be accurate at the moment...

1.) The first cars have not been moved back, they should be here for the beginning of September.

2.) The reason why you can't pick and choose lots of options is that Mazda's are not built in Europe and therefore are subject to the EUs import restrictions. Therefore Mazda UK cannot afford to have odd speced cars sitting around from stock waiting for people to buy them or have everyone having factory orders which they would then have to wait months for. The cars come with a pretty high level of standard equipment for each model and as most people on here seem to agree offer great value for money. Clearly the first ones of the production line for the UK market will be the ones for customers who pre-order.
I would be surprised if you won't be able to swop wheels around as dealer fitted accessories as well as things like parking sensors though.

3.) There will probably be a folding hard top version but it won't be for at least a year. But look on the bright side, if you already have a Roadster Coupe its residuals should stay high for a while as they are by far the most popular version available in the UK. smile
If you still want a Roadster Coupe you need to get down to your local showroom as they are going fast and there are still some good finance deals to be had. Probably won't bother anyone on here but the Powershift Automatic versions are long gone and there is no news on when the new model might come with one.

4.) Fuel economy is going to be considerably better than on the MK3. Combined figures quoted for the 1.5 are 47.1mpg and 40.9mpg for the 2.0. The emissions figures are also lower at 139 and 161 respectively.

5.) If you are thinking of ordering and registering on the configurator, I would get a move on as there is going to be a exclusive prize draw shortly for people who have pre-ordered for a really rather splendid event.

6.) From what I've seen if you want Soul Red, I'd get your order in quick as well because it is by far the most popular colour ordered up to now, so you may end up waiting longer.

Sorry if that's not quite as exciting as you might have hoped but as soon as I get another other news, I'll pop back.

All of the above is not the opinion or views of Mazda UK.

Toad slinks off back to his lilypad.......

If you have just ordered a new MX5 at list price, entry to the Mazda hospitality tent & a ride up the hill on the Thursday at Goodwood should be a given, not wait until your name might be pulled out of a prize draw!
