One of my wife's friends has a cottage in rural Brittany that we can use for a few days break in September. It is near Scrignac and about 30 minutes drive from Morlaix.

Has anyone been there and got any knowledge of the area? We like country walks etc, maybe a beach if the weather is good, plus the odd visit to a town etc.

My wife will be about 7 months pregnant by then so nothing too strenuous ! Thinking of getting a ferry from Portsmouth to st Malo or Caen which seems the easiest way of getting there.

Any experience of the area / ideas of places to visit would be welcome !

Fast ferry to Caen if they still run it is the best option I found.

As for places to visit we really like La Rochelle and stay in the town centre when we go as it's compact place to walk about with lots of nice restaurants, good seafood and bars all by the harbour.

Mont St Michel is worth a visit but I wouldn't bother staying as it's all a bit touristy on the island and surrounding villages and towns are pretty bleak. Get up early and do a day visit.

Think you'll find La Rochelle is in Charente-maritime and is a bit far south.

If the weather is good then agree fast craft to Caen is good but can be a it rough in bad weather which might not be good for your wife. Ferry to StMalo is good.
St Malo is a nice town with beaches and Mont St Michelle is worth a visit , but a bit touristy.
The Carnac area is a good place to stay as nice beaches and some good places to eat.

edit- just looked the fast craft is to Cherbourg. I'd be tempted to go overnight to St Malo- nice meal in Brittany Feries Restaurant and then sail back during the day

Agree with craig1912 about La Rochelle. I don't know much about the area around Morlaix but the coast between La Baule up towards Benodet is wonderful. Also worth taking in the wonderful fishing village of Guilvinec. This is the area of the Bigoudin and you occasionally see people wearing the traditional costumes. Brittany is a fantastic area and often mistakenly by-passed by those seeking the sun further south, imho.
