So after looking at 10 FL1 TD4s I've come to the conclusion I won't find one I like so I've thought about upping the budget and getting a FL2. They seem more thirsty however unless you go for a post 2009 TD4e.

What are people on here averaging out of theirs, how about on a long run? I'd be going for a manual.

I've had three Freelanders. A 2.0 TD4 auto, a FL2 2007 manual and a new Metropolis.

The manual 2.2 FL2 averaged 35-36 with 40 achievable on a motorway run. It was night and day better than the TD4, in terms of quality and reliability. The new car is an auto which suits the vehicle well and returns 33-35 in normal use.

Beware of the 06 reg FL1's as they fall into the £500 per year tax bracket.

I have a MY2013 SD4 auto (so a TD4 manual ought to be way better) and got just under 40mpg on a run up to the Lakes a few weeks back and usually average around 33mpg for local journeys. There's a whole thread on Freelander 2 mpg over on the Freel2 forum:
