Looks like I might be taking a job in the Walker area of Newcastle. Can anyone give me some pointers on which areas I should look at/avoid?

Looking to pay no more than £700 per month, unfurnished, for 2 bedrooms. Less would be better. Would prefer a house not a flat but that wouldn't be a dealbreaker. Need secure parking and a location 5-10 miles from Walker so I can cycle to work.

I know there are a few landlords on here, so if you've got something suitable please get in touch!

Walker isn't the poshest area by a long shot, and the next door bits are similar..

Personally, i'd have a look at gosforth, jesmond, and if they're too high budget then whitley bay.

I've not lived up there for a decade though, so second opinions are a must smile

With that budget Heaton might be worth a look, though it's nearly all flats.

Jesmond and Heaton both look a bit too close. What about the areas surrounding Newcastle? Rural would be OK.

Fairly sure both are still a decent 10min bike ride to walker!

Gateshead!

Check what's available in Pelaw/Bill Quay area to rent. Quiet enough,Metro station, and it's only 4 mile from Newcastle city centre

I've got a 2 bed house on the Staiths in Gateshead, it's right on the banks of the Tyne so cycling into Newcastle is quite easy. My tenant is actually moving out in four weeks but I think I've already got someone lined up for it. They go for around £595 per month unfurnished , they don't have garages but do have allocated parking. Its a nice place even though its near to the not so nice Teams area, my sister lives there and loves it. There are a couple up for rent on Rightmove (including mine) but they are asking £695 which is way too high. The postcode is NE8 2DG.

I see what you mean about The Staiths; looks like a nice place to live. Lack of secure parking is a dealbreaker for me though.

Ah yes you did say miles, sorry! Think in my head 10 mins is the max I could handle, where 10 miles would be impossible!!

RMG or similar we've just kicked them out as they've mismanaged our site to their financial gain, not so much a problem for house owners on these sites but shared blocks/apartments etc it can mean a lot when it comes to selling up regards to checks mortgage etc,

Was £600 ish per annum when we moved in, it's now more than my council tax, but things are looking up now there gone

Anybody looking at renting a property on these sites should check who the managing agent is as part of your searches ( Google is your friend)

The world is your oyster. Take a look at the map and decide, from High Heat on, up through Long Benton, Benton, Killingworth, Dudley, Annitsford, Seghill and up to Cramlington (probably about as far as you'd want to be if you were cycling). Head I g towards the coast, there is plenty to choose from in North Tyneside.

If you were to go south of the river, you might find something suitable. Crossing the river poses and issue, closest passage to Walker would be the Millennium Bridge and up the quayside towards St Peter's Basin.

There's the pedestrian tunnel the other way (though I think its closed for a few months).

I was a big fan of Heaton when I lived there but most places are Tyneside flats so parking would likely be a back yard at best.

I think in the OP's boat I'd gravitate somewhere towards the coast (no pun intended). It'll make for a nice cycle along the river and there are some nice pockets to live in along there. Parts of North Shields are quite pleasant though the town center always seems rough. Tynemouth is great though maybe out of budget. Cullercoats would be a good compromise. I let a 2 bed flat out to Tenants in Whitley Bay with a garage for well under the OP's budget (it's taken though) but Whitley Bay has some shabby areas so you'd need to tread carefully there. The world is your lobster.

I'd be tempted to look at Wideopen. 5 miles from Newcastle centre (although not checked how far to Walker specifically) but it's a lot cheaper than Gosforth/Jesmond and not a bad area and there should be a few properties at that price point. I lived there for 10 years (over 10 years ago).

OP it might be a good idea to post up some of your potentials, we can then give a verdict of good or bad area rather than us suggesting hundreds of various places. I think a garage with a two bedroom property will be your biggest hurdle, whilst there are some it will certainly rule out a large majority of two beds.

Does it have a garage? It would have to be really nice for me to pay that much.

On a side note, it seems to be really common for rental properties to be a bit rough and ready. I've obviously been looking on Rightmove and Zoopla and many of the pics show grubby walls, dated interiors, disgusting 70s carpets etc. Are people really willing to rent places that look like that? I'm not a snob, but if it's going to be my home I don't expect it to look like a house from an episode of Life on Mars...
