Just been knocked sideways by the news that Hill Climb legend and pilot of "The White Escort" lost his life earlier today whilst competing in Co Clare . RIP , one of the triers .

Tragic. Hell of a driver. Killed doing what he loved. His videos will live on and inspire many others to keep their right foot well planted.

I was actually going to head down yesterday as it's my local hillclimb but a funeral prevented me. Got the call last night about it from my father. Extremely sad news. Still remember the last time I saw him. It was about 3 years ago, he was sideways, flat out at about 100 mph surrounded by stone walls in the escort.

Or not, perhaps.

There is a saying in aviation that there are old pilots and bold pilots - but not many old. bold pilots.

Simon McKinley was without doubt one of the most inspiring drivers to watch. The Irish rally guys have balls of steel anyway but this guy was very very special. For several years his videos have shown people too young to know the Escorts history, with car control beyond the capability of most of us, heart felt wishes to family friends and crew. Look up the White escort parts 1 and 2 of you haven't seen them already

But so glad in the nicest way possible that he went out doing what he absolutely loved, and was best at.

once saw simon compete and was truly truly impressed

I rallied escorts for years and then moved onto track days in 911's etc. Seeing him confirmed that I was merely a peddler and nowt more.

A genuine talent and a big miss to motorsport.

condolences to family&friends
