It's not just the Tesco ones, I've seen similar things happen with loads of liquid air fresheners that were spilt on the interior: melted/broken air vents, discoloured plastics etc.

I use a neutradol gel car air freshener and keep it on the rear parcel shelf. Never had a problem with them apart from having to change them every 10 days or so. At £3 each it works out 30p a day just to keep the car smelling nice.

I can't see why you need to use an air freshener. Just keep the car interior clean and it won't smell.

This is why they've had to sell their last private jet.

Did the air freshener ruin the dashboard of that, too?

If you do need one, autoglym do a great carpet spray that smells great and doesn't melt interiors.

I took the insides of my California scents out of the can and put 2 blocks in my ashtray and one in my vent, 24 hours later both the vent and ashtray were a right mess luckily both replaceable. Not sure what's in it to melt plastic so bad.

But you're all breathing it in every time you drive so have a think about that....

Seems like Febreeze does the same thing (http://www.complaintsboard.com/complaints/febreeze-liquid-air-freshener-vent-clip-on-damaged-vehicle-interior-c637736.html).

TBH I'm surprised - normally these things a basically and alcohol solution of perfume. The alcohol should do anything to plastic, so perhaps they're using acetone instead (which is dumb).

Gets rid of the smell of all the joints they've been smoking in the car.

After a bit of further investigation it looks like the culprit may be benzyl acetate - there seems to be a fair bit of it in the Febreeze products and it's used as a solvent for plastics and other things.
