I'm planning on the above in June.

Thinking of driving overnight to Brescia, staying there for a couple of days then continuing across Europe into Brasov, Romania.

I'm pretty flexible with regards to routes etc. so was just wondering of anyone had any must see, interesting places to stop off at, detour to, and visit either on the way to, and around, Brescia, and then the same for the rest of the journey? Roads to make sure we take, and those to avoid?

We'll be going to the Mille Miglia Museum in Brescia, and maybe a bit if sightseeing (Milan/Verona/Venice) and I want to take a couple of days to drive the Transfagarasan & Transalpina Passes in Romania when we're there... driving

Looking at ViaMichelin the route seems to be France/Switzerland/Italy/Slovenia/Hungary/Romania.

Does anyone have a better/more interesting route? I'm open to ideas and suggestions! We've got accommodation in both Brescia and Brasov, but maybe breaking the journey up with a night in between each leg might be a good idea?

London to Brescia is 800 odd miles - pretty keen in one go. More than a day at work anyway driving

Yeah, bit of a trek. I've done London to Czech in one go a few times which is similar distance... Although that's why I'm thinking about breaking it up a bit more this time!

I'd be able to do it on my own, but probably not with a crabbit missus at my shoulder! What about an alpine retreat? I've never driven in, only flown, but Switzerland requires some administration if you want to use their motorways IIRC. Might be worth the French route.

The route via Strasbourg and Switzerland will cost €44.50 in peage and €40 in swiss vignette

The route via Geneva and Mont Blanc tunnel will cost €140 in peage and €43.50 for the Mont Blanc tunnel

Thanks for the replies.

Think we'll be going via Gotthard Tunnel or pass at this point. TomTom seems to route this way too, and I'll
be using that for the most part.

Going to do London to Brescia in one hit, unless tiredness levels get too much. Checking the nav it says 872 miles and 13hrs 45 mins at present. Should be ok with a chunk of that overnight.

I'm going to download TomTom Eastern Europe for the phone as well so hopefully I'll just follow the best route all the way to Brasov. Although only 13% of Romania is covered, I'll assume the main routes and cities will be on there.

I'll grab an AA European Road Atlas too, just to be safe.

We're taking the bikes so I'm hoping to add some cycling of the Transfagarasan Pass to the driving of it. I've joined a local Cycling group on Facebook and had plenty of nice feedback and offers of rides etc. They seem to do some kind of Friday night critical mass things, and Sunday afternoon rides to Brasov Poiana(Ski Resort) which could be good. They all seem to want to go for a beer too. Which is nice.

All set car wise, just waiting for a spare bulb kit to arrive and I'm good.

Can't wait to get going now!
