4UP Weston On the Green last night...

Following the debacle of the 9UP at Silverstone this was going to be easier. I figured we had a matched team so there would be less complaining. In the WUP I decided to chuck in some sprints and I obviously wasn't ready as my back twinged. After that it was bloody annoying.

Easy start and it was pretty obvious that the pace would be driven by two of us with the third man hanging on and fourth not overly happy smile Worked out my efforts and they totaled 8 mins of the 22:30 at an average of 330w. A couple of 60 sec pulls of 350-360w started to unbalance it, so after some 'discussion' i.e. being called a 'fking stupid fking tt' this was reduced. The other stronger guy also had to be muzzled a few times. The course is an airfield so I was loving it, narrow and sharp turns which suits me down to the ground. One of us didn't like hitting the corners hard, weird.

It felt pretty good and I reckon if two of us had of driven it harder and dropped a man we could have easily gone round sub 22. My back is still sore but i'm sure it'll be fine, it was a stupid thing to do. Ended up 6th overall so not bad but.....

My fourth attempt at a TT tonight.

How does everyone warm up? Do you gently build up your heart rate to a peak, working hard or is it a L2 type gently ride just to get everything moving? I've a feeling I over do it.

For a 10....

What works for me is 5 mins at 50% FTP, then 5 mins increasing to 80% FTP, 3 x 1 mins at the pace you are going to ride, then 5 mins at 80% with 4 hard sprints. 2 mins easy then straight to the line.

I think my back was more down to lots of stty airline flights in the last few weeks frown

Sorry, FTP?

I don't have a power meter but do have a HR monitor.

Did my first proper 10 (E7-10b) tonight and did 25:41 on a road bike.

Pretty happy with that. Power is up a smidge on previous best to 285 watts. I don't think my pacing was great so I think there is a little more to come. smile

So third tt in 5 days on Tuesday. Lumpy 25 last Thursday (P821/25), 50 on Sunday and another Lumpy 22.5 tonight (P845). Was 9 watts down on my ride tonight than 2 weeks ago on the same course, and 29 seconds slower, but happy with the output considering what I've been doing the last few days. Gonna enjoy some nice easy days and just enjoy the weather for the next week in prep for the local league a week on Sunday!

Ride there 241W average, normalised of 259W Came 5th out of 33 in the end.

Just comparing my stats from two weeks ago to last night, was ever so slightly higher and smoother across the board two weeks ago, with my left and right balance almost exactly the same, across power phase etc.

Had a period this week, where my pedalling efficiency really seemed to click, and I was very smooth and putting out a good steady power output (about 20w above my FTP). Just need to work on being able to do this for a longer period, as I couldn't keep it going over the rougher roads, although not exactly the best course for it. But felt I could hold the power, as it wasn't causing any pain or lactic build up.

Generally sky warm up, 5 mins zone 2, 8 minutes rising to zone 5, 2 minutes zone 2, 3 minutes slightly harder (zone3) including 3x6 second sprints, but I do 10 seconds, then 2 minutes easy spin. That is all power based, so zone 5 will obviously be about what sort of power you'd like to put down for the full distance, and will obviously depend upon your HR zones.

Did my 4th ever TT last night having started, err, 4 weeks ago!
Previously 2 x 10m (J2/1) - PB 27:16
Hill climb thing up Cat and Fiddle 26:37
Last night 25m on JC/24 in 1:08:11

To say I am addicted is an understatement, although interesting that the 25m time doesn't drop off as I expected which I take to mean I wasn't going hard enough on the 10 - hard to judge/pace when you are new to it.

Did my second ever 10 mile TT on tonight on the P311 which starts and ends in Ringwood. Managed 24:55 which is nearly 2 minutes quicker than the TT I did last year on a similar Ringwood course (P303). bounce

25mph for 10 miles 24mins or the hour for 25miles quite a good marker when starting out

Got my first TT this Thursday. A hilly 13.6 miler with 700ft of ascent. Managed a 44:11 (18.6 mph) during my recon at the weekend. That was with a horrendous cross/headwind for 1/3rd of the route, so hopefully with less wind and a bit more effort I can knock a couple of minutes off. My aim is not to come last - anything else is a bonus. Some strong lads from my club will be riding on full TT rigs, so I can at least use that excuse when they smash my time. I'l be riding a standard road bike - no TT bars.

A hilly TT isnt always best ridden on a TT bike. I am sure once you pin a number on your back and the time keeper gives you the 5,4,3,2,1 go you will be ok.Just make sure you dont over cook it before the first climb.

Yeah the lads have been debating road vs TT bike, but they seem of the opinion the TT bike will be faster. The KOM time was done on a TT bike in last year's event, but that lad is a bit of a beast and would probably win on a chopper (he was Yorkshire hill climb champ last year).

If your comfortable on your road bike stick a pair of clip TT bars on. I hated Hilly TT's I used to do the Harrogate Nova one in March which went over Menwith hill etc.I prefered flat courses.

TT bike nearly always quicker unless its actually a hill climb with a fairly punchy gradient, but its not - get stuck in.

I don't own TT bars so I'll be riding what I have, which is very un-aero, apart from the 40mm clinchers. Looking forward to getting stuck in !
