What would you do?

Travelling from the Essex Riviera - head says M1, Googlemaps says A1.

All depends on day, time of day, etc as to which route I'd take in the wagon.

When driving to Liverpool I will usually opt for the A1 and M62 - much better run imo.

I only ever use the M6 if I leave at early o'clock - I hate that road with a passion!!!

Would be leaving about 9 or 10 on a Saturday.

Should be able to do it in about 3 1/2 to 4 hours on a good run?

Should be reasonable on a Saturday, I'm with Scouse my choice would be A1. Bit more variety on places to stop, and options on alternate routes if there was a smash, or similar delays.

My car is at painters in Rotherham and will be going to a trimmer in Huddersfield and I did this trip last week (Wednesday) via the M1, what a nightmare, the M1 is full of road works at 40-50 mph nice for fuel saving but added considerable time to the journey, I'll be going A1 next time.....

My Mrs has got a bladder like a sieve - when we leave Colchester I am lucky if I can get to Cambridge services without a stop request. laugh

If she is asleep I usually stop at Blyth near Doncaster, Costa Coffee FTW!!

Leaving at 9 or 10 on a Saturday should be a smooth run - the North bound side has two cash cameras but they come into view quite early - somewhere between Oakham and Newark. After Newark you will hit a 50 zone at Retford - 2 very live cameras there - enjoy!!

Cheers Scouse & Chilli - looks like it's the A1 then!

Do-able from Southend in 4 hours with a coffee stop?

yes In the TVR smile

M25, M11, A14 AND A1, plenty of coffee stops, cafes etc on the A14 and A1 if you fancy a change from bog standard motorway services food and prices.
