Does anyone know of a good guide/list to museums in the UK? I've been to a few just by finding out about them by accident when I was in the area, sometimes and it occurred to me I don't know how many there are or where they are.

I've been to Beaulieu of course, Brooklands, Haynes in Somerset (which is fantastic since they expanded it), the Lakeland and the Heritage museum at Gaydon so far. Any thoughts, or recommendations from anyone?

Thanks for that. My wife is especially fond of cars from 20s and 30s, so that looks a good one for the list. smile

Coventry Transport Museum is superb, and is mainly car-orientated in spite of its name, and it is also free (so please support their excellent shop if you go)

Since the expansion/refurb? I spent hours in there last September. Especially liked the American hall.

Found a small one last Easter in the middle of Dartmoor! Old bus garage with about 40 cars and 20 bikes.

Ta. Bentley Wildfowl was a nice find - went there too a few years back, quite by accident.

Even my wife enjoyed going round this one? It also temporarily houses a Donald Campbell exhibition which is fantastic ( or did do when we were last there)

Yep, both of those were good. We saw the lakeland one only a month or 2 back - the Bluebird exhibition was there then (and was quite moving, I thought).

Grampian Transport Museum in Alford (NE Scotland) has a good mixture and a local feel to it, as well as a good set of events. Museum in Elgin has an amazing selection of sports and racing cars. Myreton Motor Museum at Aberlady, near Edinburgh has a very wide ranging collection of veteran and vintage cars and is also close to the Museum of Flight. Although it is many years since I visited, the Shuttleworth Collection in Bedfordshire is also interesting though the cars take second place to the aeroplanes.

All good suggestions so far

http://www.dovertransportmuseum.org.uk/ is a good one check opening times though.

http://www.llangollenmotormuseum.co.uk/ small but a nice collection.

I prefer a small museum run by enthusiasts, I went to one somewhere, may have been yorkshire which was more like a shed to keep all there projects in than a museum but it was nice to talk to enthusiasts about the cars.

The C.M. Booth Collection of Historic Vehicles in Rolvenden, Kent, is a nice little place with quite an emphasis on the Morgan 3-Wheeler. It's only small, though, so I'd recommend combining it with a visit to the Kent & East Sussex Railway and the Mill Toy and Pedal Car Museum in Northiam.
