Currently completing an apprenticeship with an aerospace company. At the end of my apprenticeship I am going to have the choice between Helicopters/Airframes and Gas Turbine MRO, and was wondering the state of the market in terms of jobs? Our current business is around 70% engines 30% airframes but wasn't sure if it was indicative of the general state of the market.

What qualifications will you finish your apprenticeship with?

An NVQ in Performing Engine Operations and a Cat A license afterwards.

I'd start working towards a B1 licence. The modules are reasonably straightforward so long as you're willing to put some effort in. Of course you'll also need some 145 experience.

It's a bit of a long process but it'll ultimately be worth it. I'm B1.3 and there's plenty of work depending where you are geographically.

Any recommendations as to who to do your licences with?

I did mine a few years ago under BCAR section L then converted to part 66.

I know a few guys who have used the school at Kemble with decent results.....

I'm with Deerfoot. Start working towards your B1.3 modules. I did but I was RAF first. There is work out there and the earnings can be quite good especially with oil and gas.
It's a great job, sometimes frustrating but the job satisfaction is what makes it for me.

So the B1.3 license is for turbine engine helicopters, i'm assuming that's airframe based? I'm not sure what the specific qualifications are for turbine engine maintinence.

I spend roughly 30% of my time on engine work. Most of it is scheduled maintenance although I`ve removed and refitted modules post unscheduled events (overtemp for example). I can replace modules but not split them. This has been on Pratt & Whitney, Rolls Royce and Turbomeca units.

It depends on where you work to be honest. I used to work for an operator so did engine work on a regular basis. I`m now at a maintenance facility so don`t see it as much.
