My youngest lad wants one for his upcoming birthday,. anyone have any suggestions? - it's got to be tough whatever it is (lets just say he is not the most delicate of kids smile ) Dont't mind what brand it is, as long as it can bomb around the garden at a reasonable pace and take some stick.

He loves the look of Tamiya's Lunchbox, but I feel something of that level is a few years off yet. My old Tamiya Sandscorchers and Hilux are staying hidden in the loft for a long while yet!!

Get the lunchbox, it is almost destructible. My 7 year old daughter uses mine and she crashes it on a regular occurrence without breaking it. If your worried about it you can always put in a slower motor till he get the hang of driving it.

Another vote for putting a slower motor into something "proper" (for example a Lunchbox, just off the top of my head biggrin ). Rock crawler motors seem to be about £10.

But updgrade the servos to metal geared ones from asiatees for £30 quid for the pair as the satnadrad servos are garbage. My 6 year old loves his and you don't have to worry about it bouncing off stuff and breaking. He also has a 45mph HPI Bullet Flux which is arguably the better car but the rock-crawler wins everytime when it comes to playing with them.

They are awesome fun too. I probably enjoy sneaking a go on the crawler more than the bullet if I'm honest. It's truley amazing what the thing can climb up and the 4WS function just adds to its go anywhere capability.

When is said birthday?

Tamiya recently announced a new model for beginners - exactly what you are after. Deliveries not expected til the summer, but initial description and pictures look promising. Anything that gets young people into the hobby is a good thing.

This new model doesn't have a name yet - but it has the appearance of a buggy with a 380 motor (like the old Grasshopper).

I had (well still have although it is at my parent's on the other side if the planet) a Lunchbox.

The only problem I had with it was that it stripped the thread on the plastic tierod ends - the front wheels bear the brunt of most impacts. They may have changed the design in the last 25 years or there may be hop up parts available - but something to be aware of if a 6 year old is going to be driving it.

Blackfoot/Mud Blaster

As tough as a Lunchbox, but a bit more stable for a youngster?

When buying get a metal geared servo

Tamiya mud blaster II/Bush Devil II/Blackfoot III. The WT01 chassis is fantastic, both my kids have them and they are superb, very robust and easily upgradeable. Polycarbonate bodies with a huge choice of them available to personalise...here's our fleet;

Some reading here;

And here showing how versatile a chassis it is...

The Lunchbox is a bit novelty, you'll be forever repairing it and kids will get fed up having to keep running to roll it back onto its wheels, for LB fans, here's mine

Tamiya Mad Bull is another good one, I bought one for mine a 6, but he very quickly outgrew it to the WT01 and we never looked back. The extra ground clearance on the WT01 means you can pretty much use it anywhere.

My Monsterised Hornets for a bit of fun...

Enjoy...

Love the Hornets!

I am considering converting my blackfoot to twin-motor 4wd, does it basically half the run time?

No it's not that bad but depends how you do it. Our Dual Hunters which are essentially just that, are running on the tamiya dual esc which is very efficient, but you're restricted to brushed motors and they don't have lipo cut so you're stuck with nimh unless you run an external lipo warning which obviously isn't as effective as lipo's.

Some have fitted two brushless esc's and motors and had great results, of course brushless are a lot more efficient too.

Personally I just went 2wd brushless/lipo with my main rig, the blue impreza wrc one, and have never missed 4wd as it has so much torque and ground clearance and so light its never really got stuck! It also has well over an hour run time typically.

Cheers

Cheers

If anything, I get more than enough runtime on 3300 NiMh, so thought the 4wd might be handy. I use it with the kids I work with, there is a large "bowl" in the woods where we use it and it would help getting up the slopes. We have 4 packs of the nimhs, so we should be fine

Nice. Stock up on the chrome parts tree as the body mounts will break first!
