Anybody come up with a discreet way of mounting their phone down near the parcel shelf or on top of the radio binnacle? Prefering not to drill into or permanently stick a mounting in I've been looking on mobile fun for ideas, but mounting is an issue. Any suggestions?

Have a look at the B&Q table leg thread in this forum from March 20th.
An interesting solution to your issue

Depending on the stereo you have fitted, have you thought about this idea?

Yes saw the chair leg thread but looking for something a little more subtle as I only want to mount a normal size smart phone as discreetly as possible but still be able to see it to use it as a sat nav.

Thanks Macey good spot I was considering that, although I no longer have a radio with a cd slot, was thinking of trying to get it to fit between the top of the radio binnacle and the bottom of the dash roll but don't think it will be stable enough.

For what I want the perfect fixing point would be the cross member but don't think it's wide or flat enough for a suction style holder.

I made a small box and covered it in carpet to match the inside of the dash shelf and fitted a piece of black Perspex to the top, this sits in the shelf next to the radio. It's just placed in but grips tight enough to be secure. The sat nav suction cup then sticks to the Perspex. The view is slightly obstructed by the steering wheel but I prefer it to being in the windscreen. I'll take a photo at the weekend if it helps.

A picture would be great thanks, that sounds like a good idea.
I hadn't thought it would be hard to see in portrait but if so I guess you could use the same box arrangement but put a goose necked holder on to sit over the radio? scratchchin

I use this to hold my iPhone 6+ to the right hand side of the stereo.

I had the same problem and in the end made up an ally plate that curves around by the radio, leaving space underneath for the usual detritus - think I've still got the template somewhere. Entirely removeable. This was Mk1 to prove the point - second version same shape but better made, nicer edge trim etc.

Polish it up, a simple sucker phone mount and the jobs done. Got me all the way to Le Mans and back this weekend.

Thanks John your solution looks similar to the one Rich came up with above, so I've ordered a couple of different suction holders from Mobile fun, one like yours and the other with a longer neck so I can have a play around with positioning and heights as Rich mentioned his was slightly obscured by the steering wheel.

I'm sure there must be a car stereo system with an inbuilt sat nav, that could flip 'down' (as apposed to 'up') to make it more aesthetically pleasing?

Well following the suggestions above I got two holders from Mobilefun to experiment with. The first was the Omniholder which is nice and compact and closes down to almost nothing when not in use. Great for attaching to the windscreen and any other smooth surface, but doesn't quite have the depth I was looking for, meaning part of the phone was hidden by the steering wheel when attached between radio pod and wheel. The second one was quite a revelation, http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/gripmount-pro-case-comp... , it has a gel type suction cap which is so powerful it attaches to the top roll of the dash and is virtually unmoveable. So much so I was concerned it might actually tear the vinyl! A great solution if you want something permanently mounted but for me this is only for occasional use. So it was time to look at bases along the lines of those suggested. I found an old 8*6 hard plastic photo wallet with a smooth back. With a bit of persuasion it fitted on the shelf really well and made a good flat base for the 'gripmount' holder. It wasn't as stable as I would have liked so filling it with some sand will sort that out.
Thanks to all especially those with pictures it was a great help.
