I think the Midnight BBC Radio 4 News may have trailled Balls as a 'former Big Beast'.

Unless it's going to be Vince Cable or Ken Clarke.

Money talks. The unions fund Labour. Unless Labour dare to end the reliance on union money, they will end up with a union candidate.

Some in Labour recognise that the electorate refused the left wing unionised vision. The unions aren't yet there, therefore Labour aren't yet there.

Goody for us, as Labour will be spending quite a while on the sidelines unless they accept and adopt change.

Burnham looks to have blown his chances - snout in troughwise. They still don't get it, do they.

"Labour leadership favourite Andy Burnham in expenses row over claiming £17,000 a year to rent London flat - despite having his own nearby"

He's not breaking any rules but it doesn't look good. Why can't he just live in his own London property like Yvette Cooper and Mary Creagh do.

This quote is telling...

It came as Harriet Harman, the acting Labour leader, said the race to find Ed Miliband's permanent replacement must not be a 'stitch-up'.
'There is absolutely not going to be a stitch-up by the unions in this election,' Ms Harman said.
'We've got a completely different election system than we've had previously.'

This from a woman that said it wasn't a stitch up and that he hadn@t stabbed his brother in the back.

Problem with Burnham is that he is STILL a reminder of old times.

Its a shame that there are not some younger contenders - totally fresh faces.

There probably are, but they've all said, 'fk this - I'm not going to go for leader at the moment, deal with this stinking hangover for the next term in opposition and blow my chances. I'll wait another 5 years and then see what happens.'

I would imagine that if your employer expected you to work in two cities, you would expect them to pay for acommodation in one of them? If others choose to pay for their own accomodatiom then thats great, but it has nothing to do with this situation.

I have a few investment properties but i wouln't provide use one of them as a second home to suit my employer unless they paid me the going rate for it.

I'm not a labour supporter btw

I thought the issue here was that he could do that and claim back some of the cost of the mortgage, but instead he chose to rent that property out and live somewhere else and claims for that - or did I misunderstand?

What you say is true and I agree with you, unfortunately for Burnham it isn't usually the facts of a case that determines opinion and the accusation of him being just another freeloader is likely to be damaging.

MP's used to be able to claim the interest portion of the mortgage (but not the capital).. The rules were changed so that they can now only claim for rent. If he stayed in his flat he would be now paying for the second home out of his own pocket.

The sensible thing to do would be to either sell the flat, or move out and let it. That way he is back in the position of his employer paying for the extra property.

The Mail is spot on, no parliamentary rules are being broken but it's miles away from the Nolan Principles of Public Life & Service.

If all the troughers were eliminated who'd be left?
