I need a starter kit of pads/polish/a decent backing plate for my Silverline Silverstorm polisher that won't cost the earth - any recommendations anyone?

One of the jobs I need to do is restoring a badly faded red car

I'd go with farecla stuff, it's what I use at work and I never have any issues. Go for a Farecla Velcro backing plate, some G3 ultra compound and a pack of yellow 'g mop' foams.

Might seem pricey to a degree but you really do get what you pay for. Only other thing I'd use is 3M fast-cut plus, here

Removing the 'dead' paint layer from a once red car will not require such an aggressive polish as per the G3 mentioned above, it'll serve only to add further refinement stages to the process to get to an acceptable level of finish.

Koch Chemie H802 & M201 on their yellow and orange pads should see you complete the job in an enjoyable fashion.

The above being available from SlimsDetailing.

cheers

Thanks for the suggestions so far - worth noting that this is just the first car I need to do, will have many others in the future so would like as "one size fits all" a set as possible

I'm not a detailer but I do need reasonable results.
