So I currently have a 2005 wrx prodrive wagon, but due to work I need a newer car.

I have driven lots of cars and today was the Evo X.

For the money it seems the one to go for.

Are there any points I need to look out for?

Cheers guys.

The X is not as good as a IX! A few things to check: fuel pump relay needs uprating otherwise it runs lean, check it has the new type of timing chain as the old type stretch, check the pulley recall has been done as it will shred your belts, AYC pumps fail regularly due to the location ( a rebuilt pump is about £600), front dampers fail and also knock at the top mounts.

Any X SST owners on here? Would like to replace my Galant VR4 with one in a year or so. Just wondering how reliable the boxes are and how they cope with extra boost.

I've not heard good things about the SST gearbox , nor the X engine to be honest , heard of a few rod failures , as already said the IX is the better car

You can upgrade the SST box though

I have been ringing a number of different tuners and evo specialists.
The AYC pump now has a 5yr warentee (if you have FSH from Mit ) if not a new pump is
£600 to fix or £1200 to replace.

The clutch pack does not seem to be the issue, the issue seems to be making sure the oil is changed more regularly
And that will keep it running better for longer.

No one has stated about the engine being weak ????!!! Not sure that's true at all.

Still sounds a bloody fast car for not a lot of cash.

I think when they get circa 10yrs old, more people will find problems.

The rod issue seems worrying. Read some of the thread by Matt at TRL from your links. He knows his onions when it comes to Evos! Guess it's something to budget for when looking at earlier examples. My VR4 has known issues with the gearbox but preventative maintenance helps to keep them sound so hopefully a car with regular oil changes with the correct fluids would keep an SST box going until you upped the power?

Prices for the X seem to have settled now, I recall seeing several sub £14k cars in the classifieds at the start of the year. Similar examples are now a couple of grand more. I wonder if they will drop at all again given the purists preference for the VIII and the IX.

I've owned a 2011 X for a year.
It is the 300 SST.
No problems at all.
10,000 miles in that time including:
Three track days and a 2500 mile round trip to Spain.

£390 for a service by Ralliart. Great service by enthusiasts.

Fantastic to drive. Corners like nothing I've ever driven. Awesome acceleration and braking.
28 mpg on a run.
Very civilised for every day use.
Small boot and a bit dark in the back but rear seats rarely used.
Frankly, it's the bees knees.

Also, I bought it from a Mitsubishi dealer with an aftermarket warranty. Just for peace of mind.

A friend has had both. The IX is the last of the "true evos" in its lighter weight, raw feel etc.

The X, however, makes a better daily driver and is much less annoying on long journeys, while still being a weapon.

I currently have a Evo X FQ SST in which is a huge step up form a Megane RenaultSport R26 and I absolutely love it!

Mine has had the works of the strengthened conrods & bolts, new black relay fuse and also the new timing chain and I would recommend those to be done.
Any Evo specialist will advise this or may do this without your permission smile

The SST box is awesome, flick the car into SPORT and she comes alive, if your brave give a go in SUPERSPORT!
It has been tuned nearly touching 400BHP by TRL Developments so the SST is tuneable.

I have had no problem with the Evo X, the obvious expenses of fuel and tryes in which you wont be new to by owning a Subaru.

Servicing can range around £250 - £400 in which should be done every 4-6k miles depending on your style of driving.

One niggle I always have is there is no boot courtesy light!!! So pack a torch if using this at night.

Good luck.

Hi guy's

Sorry for the delay,

So following a lot of test driving and forum hunting and talking to garages and tunning places I decided that the EVO X is not the one to buy. It seems it has quite a few problems that all seem to cost quite a bit to fix.

Instead I bought a sensible /dull Audi S3, it's very fast but the handling is rubbish compared with the EVO.

My plan to to convince the misses to buy the sensible car and get a EVO 9 MRFQ as that or EVO 6 TM seems to be the ones to have!

Cheers for all your help guys.

If it helps, I think you made the right long term choice.

But if you do go for a 6 TME, be careful and get the body up on a ramp.
I bought some parts from one that was breaking and that one was scarily rusty underneath.

A quick question since you mentioned the absence of a boot light in your X.
What is the socket/bracket on the left of the passenger footwell for? It looks like it may hold a torch.

Its for an emergency flare.

My first JDM import still had one in there. Most used cars have them removed at export and UKDM cars never have them fitted..

Thanks.
I have to say PH invariably has the answer.

Disappointing thread is disappointing!!!

But from everything I've ever seen/read/heard about all the Evos, it seems that you have to have just the right balance of crazy & brave pills to actually commit to one.

Still though, went from looking at a Evo X to buying an S3? Something went quite wrong there it seems hehe

The X is manageable, usable and practical.
I went from TVRs via a Cayman to an X. The SST twin clutch is a beautiful piece of engineering. It has three modes: Normal; Sport and Track.
Normal is just that, pootle to the supermarket or cruise all day. 30mpg.
Sport is fun fun fun! A real driving experience. The box always has the next gear ready.
Track is mad and I have used it for one lap. Min 7000 rpm FFS. No thanks.
I was on the track yesterday and must have done 50+ laps. A real blast. Then tootled home with the radio on in comfort.
My understanding is that the X is much more civilised than the earlier models. Maybe softcore for the purists but a true all-rounder.

Plus also just remembered, unlike the previous models, the X doesn't need servicing every 5 yards/half a day right?

That's what always scared me away from Evos, even though I remember it was something like only every 1 in 3 services is more than just an oil & filter change it was still just the massive ball ache of running a car that required routine maintenance soo often.
