I read this last year. Best book I had read in a while and did find it impossible to put down. First book by Andy Weir.

"Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there."

Now I see that it is to be a film. It's a great story so please don't fek it up Mr R Scott.

I think the book will be much better than the movie I'm afraid.

This. Ridley going downhill for the last what zillion years, and Matt Damon just can't play so jovial a character.

i think he can do it justice. great actor, see his performance in 'the informant!' for something against the grain of his usual roles.

I've never been able to eat a baked potato without a brief thought to this book smile

Superb book, I think it could transfer to film somewhat successfully. But it won't be as good as the book as they never are.

I have high hopes but Ridley's Prometheus was a real let down.

And many think Prometheus wasn't a let down. Shall we start a third thread?

Just noticed Sean Bean listed, I don't remember Mitch dyeing? tongue out

But also the character "Venkat Kapoor" is being cast with Chiwetel Ejiofor who's of Nigerian decent, which seems a very odd decision. There are Indian actors out there aren't there?

Due out at end of Novemver.

I'm quite excited, sure Scott will treat it with respect and I personally do think that Matt Damon has the cojones to pull it off. Looking forward to a trailer!

No let's not.

Director's previous works will forever be discussed in topics that concern their future works, or is that not allowed?

You seem to be on a personal mission to refute any negative comments about the film.

The majority of his recent(ish) stuff as director has been pretty good.

Fair enough, I have to go back to 2007's American Gangster for the last film of his that I enjoyed. Everything since has either been dull (Body of Lies, Robin Hood), stupid (Prometheus), or both (The Counsellor, Exodus) IMHO.

Will still give this a go though as will always live in hope of him turning things around, and at least the premise sounds interesting.

And before American Gangster was Kingdom of Heaven (excellent), Black Hawk Down (again, excellent), Gladiator (very good), Hannibal (very good) White Squall (very good), Thelma and Louise etc. As a director his canon is one of the exceptional marred by the odd turkey (Robin Hood). I particularly enjoyed The Duellists for its pace and atmosphere... but that was a long time ago. As was Alien and Blade Runner. Obviously fingers crossed for this next one.

For me Ridley is either very good or very bad, there doesn't seem to be a middle ground. Let's hope the good Ridley turns up for this one.

After reading the book I thought it would work best as a mini series, with a cliff hanger at the end of every episode type thing.

I'm just not sure how a book that is 90% inner monologue would work as a film, it would be cool if they did it as a silent film just watching him do his thing while we can only hear him breathing most of the time (a bit like Gravity I guess), but I'm not sure if Hollywood is brave enough for that.

Are you the same person from the Walking Dead thread that suggested that an episode featuring a day in the life of a zombie would be a good idea hehe

To be fair, that sounds like a cracking idea.
