Hi all,

Looks like we'll be back in the UK after 12 years in the Middle East.

My Father lives in the middle of nowhere just South of Bucknell, and we were thinking of setting up around Ludlow as it looks like a really nice area. We'll be (semi)retired so will be happy to potter about and do lots of nothing unless we feel like doing something smile.

What's the general vibe of that sort of area?

For reference, rest of the family is around Milton Keynes and I've liver in the area before and not bothered if I didn't go back, but I know the wife would like some family close for support.

Hi,

I have family that live in the area, They stay outside Ludlow in caynham which is lovely which you have great views of Clee Hill plus if you need storage theres a chicken farm been converted in to storage, Its improved over the years I remember it had no Tesco etc now its in the 21st century.

you also have Mortimer Forest which is great for walking etc and then you have north farm stables if you want to do some horse riding run by Peter who a great guy.
A49 can be a pita if there's an accident but like most places if you know the back roads its ok.

I'm in Much Wenlock and love living in the area - and I think it only gets nicer as you head further to the South and West.

I'm in the same area (Leominster)...... beautiful part of the world.

A49 can be a bit of a pain - most of the accidents are caused by locals. Frequently. Annually.

Lots of great walks - if you like to embrace the rural lifestyle, it's lovely.

Some truly epic driving roads too wink

We're going to be staying in Presteigne for 3 months as a stop-gap.

Can't wait - I want to walk an hour a day, up the hills. Come rain or shine.

Lovely part of the world. Get down towards Wigmore and head into Mortimer Forest.
You've also got Kingsland and the Angel pub...

Lots of places smile

I'm a country boy, best times of my upbringing were in deepest, darkest Somerset, so I love that stuff.

Ok, here's another thing - My wife is Indian, she doesn't look Indian per se, but she doesn't look Welsh! That's for sure. Now, I know that all the awesome people I've met in the UK are actually totally cool providing the other party (wife) is.

We're not going to have any issues are we? I get really fighty on her behalf frown
She just want's chill and enjoy the beauty of the UK, as do I!

|IME most of the people in South Shropshire were born in the county, so you won't find as much racial diversity as you get elsewhere in the UK.

That said, people are friendly, and will stop to talk to complete strangers. More so in the villages, where people get to know each other. If you go into Ludlow, you're more likely to meet a tourist than you are to meet a local.

I grew up there, but moved away for work. It's a great place to live, if you don't have work to worry about. Public transport is sketchy, but you could walk from one end of the town to the other in an hour or so.

The locals here don't discriminate on the grounds of race - outsiders are outsiders irrespective of ethnicity hehe

Seriously I would be amazed if you experienced any problems in this respect. If you were moving kids into the area then their experience may be different as the school environment will be 99% white and we know what kids can be like.

I'm really very settled here - despite working 'everywhere else' in the country its the one place I can't wait to get back to at the end of the week.

Another delight I've discovered is the local beers.

Agreed.
If you get stared at in the street, or the music stops in a pub, it has nothing to do with ethnicity biggrin They're all what I affectionately refer to as "head-scratchers" ("Oi down't really know, sirrrr")

My wife is a "Yammer", and has been accepted by the locals, so it's not unheard of though biggrin
