Hi All
I have a dilemma,I find myself with a TVR Chimaera 4.00 and a 911 (966 model). This came about as I purchased the 911 with the intention of selling the TVR. However I was late in advertising the TVR (no one wants to pay for a convertible in winter!!)and as such ended up with both. Problem is now, that some 6 months later, I keep changing my mind about which one to sell.Roof down, sun out, can't beat the TVR but I always have in the back of my mind that niggling feeling that it might not start, electrics mainly. Porsche always starts and is modern and economically, boring maybe but peace of mind nevertheless. Porsche will only go down in value, TVR probably up. Porsche I would reckon would be cheaper to service/maintain that TVR, maybe because it's more reliable???
Anyway any views greatly appreciated.

On the TVR front need to replace rear suspension dampers. Thought Protech. Anyone used/recommend these or some others maybe. Not looking to track the car, just need a decent high speed road sort of unit.

Many thanks for any help on either question.

If you ever had the intermediate shaft break on the 996 engine which would (on the majority of occasions ) wreck the engine at a horrendous cost when compared to what it would cost to have the camshaft fail(poss biggest weakness) on the Chim engine I reckon selling the 996 would be the way to go.

Your kidding there of course.... Shirley?? The reason I haven't got a Porker is
1. It's a girls car. &
2. The parts are usually 10x more expensive than Rover & Ford parts....

No brainer from every angle really.... Oh & the TVR is infinitely more exciting etc. biggrin

Haha not heard of a porsche being a girls car before, does that mean you have to have a hairy chest and medallion to drive a TVR.....although I sort of know what you mean.

Re servicing/maintenance costs my point was that the porsche being more reliable (maybe) you are not paying for the odd electric gremlins etc that seem to occur with the TVR? Appreciate that porsche parts are more expensive just because they have "porsche" written on them!!!!!

2004 Carrera 3.6. The 4 wheel drive model. Must admit that it drives every well.

Speaking as one that has had both, its got to be TVR every time. Just don't call me Shirley!

What do you think are the advantages of the TVR over the porsche?

back to OP Post..

Protech are a good UK firm who make a good product at a good price..

They will also speak to customers and supply a product that you will find totally acceptable..

you can pay more and not get any better, you can pay lots more and get other products that are better.

I have them on the back of my 68 Griff racer and they are absolutely fine.

Hi N

Thanks for the info on Protech. Thinking of biting the bullet and replacing front and rear.
S/SE Gaz nickel suspension front and rear for £525. Any good?

Where to start, personally I did not like the way the 911 handled on the limit. High speed cornering was way to floaty/bizarre rocking around the centre point of the car. The Cerbera is superbly stable at high speed. I love the way it turns into corners, very positive. I've never had a car with better brakes than the Cerb. It goes with out saying the TVR is by far and away faster accelerating at any given speed.

I had to may niggles with my Porsche, I bought it with a genuine 14k on the clock from Guildford Porsche centre but things like coil packs needed replacing at about 22k due to rust splitting the plastic coil pack covers. It had rust on the captive engine mount nuts at 3 years of age. Rust on the under tray studs. Leaky front boot due to somebody passing a cable wrongly through a rubber grommet. Mayo buildup in the oil filler tube.

For the money it was a bit pony, and it was a considerable sum. There is no way I would repeat the experience.

laughYes, think a cerb would be a totally different kettle of fish. Has crossed my mind in the past to sell both and get a cerbera. But really its between what I have at the mo.

I'm not sure I agree about 911 prices falling. 996 prices are pretty much rock bottom at the moment. The 996 turbo has already started getting stronger over the last year. Looking at the rest of the 911 range, old and new I don't think you can go far wrong.
I must admit I was very close to buying a turbo when I got my Tuscan and while I chose (arguably) the poorer investment, I wouldn't swap it.

You might be right about prices. I personally think I got a bargain on the 996 (doesn't everyone when buying cars!!!) That is one of the things that makes me think that if I sold the porsche I could spent a grand or two on the TVR

You've had them both long enough to know which of the two you really love

Keep that one and hang the maths...

Simples!

Are these the only 2 cars you have? If so, I'd go for the reliable option. If there is another car in the household you can use then go for the one that makes you happiest.

I wouldn't fit Gaz over Protech but that is just my opinion…

With adjustables many ill informed people just give themselves many more possibilities of cocking their handling up!!
