The reason it was noticeable that you were a lot better off than the locals, was because you were earning Sterling. By "significantly lower salary" you mean the same salary as the locals, in which case you're be as poor/rich as them.
For example, when you first went to Florida, meals out were cheap, accomodation was cheap, clothes were cheap.....to YOU. Because you were no doubt earning more than the locals and had a favourable exchange rate too.
You need to look at it the other way; not where is cheaper but where can I earn more. Where can I go where my skills are more in demand than the UK and therefore I will earn a higher wage, relative to local living costs.
Unless you are retiring. Then decide what your priorities are. Some places have very cheap houses but that may prove to be a bad place to keep your money. Other's have very cheap daily living costs but you may find that utilities and cars are very expensive.

Really need your head testing if you think its cheap there.
14 years there gives me a good understanding of the place.
Plus, it really is as dangerous and risky as other posters have said.
It is beautiful in places, but at a cost.
Really shouldnt be on many peoples list to live there.

I was working in South Africa last year and was surprised by the price of food, such as getting a large fillet steak in a restaurant for the equivalent of £7.
