I bought a new car last month from a dealer & as part of the process the dealer kindly sent off the transfer details & by checking the online DVLA function regularly I noted that my car had the reg. swap undertaken 4 days later...result! I taxed my new car online before I collected it & to make sure the reg.transfer wasn't delayed.

However, I received a final notice at the weekend from the DVLA that my new car was untaxed! Fortunately I'd kept the online notification & when I called the DVLA they said there was an error with their system which had caused the error. The error somewhat dented the great service of the transfer but be aware in case you find yourself in the same situation.

DVLA's systems have gone to pot lately.

I changed cars in February and sent off paperwork to transfer registration from retention.

They cocked up EVERYTHING. My payment for tax was never processed, the previous owner's tax should have been refunded (under the new system it's not retained by the car but refunded to the owner when a vehicle is sold) but still has not ben sorted 3 months on.

The delay in processing it all was so long that my private plate retention document ran out - while DVLA had it - so they just ignored that and sent out an age related log book.

I'm about 10 letters and 20 phone calls past that stage now. Always helpful 'can do' responses by phone, then completely jobsworth unhelpful written replies - if they respond at all.

I'd sack the lot and employ chimps, the service would be vastly improved.

OP I had the same on a recently purchased car. I had ignored the first reminder because I knew I had taxed it. A call to DVLA requiring me to speak to at least three different people did sort it out by hte next day, when the car appeared taxed on the is it taxed website. The alarming thing is that the DVLA's cock-ups are likely to people getting clampe. They really couldn't oganise a piss down their own leg.
