Been toying with the idea of buying a steel strung acoustic and (trying to) play some slide bluesy stuff.

Never tried before and not that good on electric either, but enjoy playing.

Quite like simple strumming stuff like Oasis at times, as well as some Frank Turner

Looking at something like the Epi DR100

Waste of time/money/effort?

Opinions please chaps....

I'd dig out/find the nastiest dog of a steel string you can find (2nd hand - pick one up for £30) with an action about a foot high high - Stick some telegraph wires on (gauge 13+) stick it open G or D crack open a bottle of bourbon and off you go...

In all seriousness if you get a nice new acoustic with a low action you'll destroy the frets in to time with a slide, if you don't have much experience with open tunings it can take a while to get to grips with as all your 'patterns' or 'shapes' no longer work - I'd say get a cheapo guitar and if you really like it fork out on a lapsteel down the line.

Is it a waste of time, absolutely not, anything that gets you on the guitar is a positive thing, even if you don't stick with it you might pick a few things up that you can transfer across to your regular playing and plus it sounds great - win win win.

Have fun smile

I love playing slide guitar.

Glass: Smoother sound for acoustics
Metal slide: Scratchier sound for acoustics

I now prefer glass, but I used to love metal slides.

Here is a link to get a traditional style bottle neck glass slide:

I have personally purchased slides from here, and they work really well. Cheap, and you can get them engraved. Old pill bottles, etc. Worth checking out wink
