I'm going to marbella in two weeks with the family and I have already cleared it with Mrs curtisl to get a ride in whilst I'm out there. Can any one recommend a decent hire place for a road bike? I've seen a few but personal recommendations would be appreciated if anyone has any.

Cheers

Not sure they will have exactly what you want, but these are great guys, speak good English, ride the area and cheaper than most http://www.yep.bike They are based in San Pedro to the west of central Marbella.

A word of warning, the area is dominated by the A-7 which is crazy for safe cycling, except on Sunday. There is a via verde along the beachfront which is OK for off-road but will be too crowded in summer. The mountain roads behind the town are hard core, but a ride up to Istan may make sense.

Ive got a booking with them for June. So far so good. reasonable prices, collection and delivery.

Carbon Felts on offer. Worth a look.

I've used them and totally recommend them.
The climb up to Istan on the old road is very good but keep off the AP-7 at all costs but a really nice climb is up to Ojen on very quite roads with great views. smile

I can also recommend Marbellarentabike. I used them in 2011 and my missus used them in 2012. The customer service was great both times. I have taken my own bike since then, the cycling is that good!

I thoroughly recommend the climb up to Ronda. I do a route that goes Elviria-Marbella- Puerto Banus-Ronda-El-Burgo-Coin-Marbella-Elviria . If your interested I can send you a .gpx. It's not hard to work it out for yourself though.

I am thoroughly excited as this Sunday I will again be doing a Century that takes that route in. The national park between Ronda and Coin blew my mind the first time I rode it. To be honest it still does as other than this annual ride I only cycle in the UK.

Have fun and let us know how you get on.

I am so very impressed that a bloke from London can ride these mountains and not be a member of a national team. I assumed that you would have to be local and have the lungs and legs to go there most weekends. Having driven the route on many occasions I can confirm it is stunning.

There is another route north of Rhonda that goes through Grazalema, I have seen a few big teams riding there, and it is also stunning scenery.

That's very kind of you but you wouldn't be very impressed if you saw the mountain goats flying past me.

I will have a look at that other route. I don't think the Missus would be impressed if I did another long ride next week smile

Thanks Matt, GranFondo and Evo Sean. I had seen your recommendation already and was going to them if I didn't get any other recommendations. RDJohn, I tried Yep but I cannot see where to hire a bike on their site as it is in Spanish and no translation from what I can see.

Looks like I will be going for the 11 speed Ultrega Felt then and heading towards the mountains. Saying that though, I will have two non cyclists in tow so I think they'd prefer a more coastal route. Time for them to get some unexpected suffer time in I think.

If your thinking of riding the N-340 for fun think again. I use it to get to Puerto Banus and back from Marbella on Sunday's and that's bloomin hairy enough! I do see people cycling along it midweek but it's definitely not for the faint hearted.

If you can get a lift to Ronda then maybe you could try a ride through the Sierra Nieves nature park to El Burgo. It's 15 miles leach way with 1700ft of climb on the way out. That might be a lot of climbing for your friends but it's very pretty. There is a small petrol station in town if you wanted to stop for supplies or a bigger one just the other side of town. I have only gone through there on Sunday's so there may be much more available. Don't be scared by the pictures of lions on the nature park sign, I have yet to see a big cat. wink

Whereabouts are you going to be staying?

Cheers Matt, that is very handy. I reckon that route will leave me cycling alone for sure.

I am staying near a golf course in Guadalmina. I have not been to that neck of the woods before but I was hoping to check out strava for some inspiration and hire a Garmin 800 when I am out there. I am sure that I saw that Marbellarentabike have 800's on hire.

Do you know if they have SPD-SL's fitted as I was going to pack my Bib shorts, jersey and shoes but no point if they are Look peddles or another variety.

I'm looking forward to a ride whilst I am out there. There closest I have gotten to overseas riding is Isle of Wight!

I took my own pedals which they fitted for me. I think that for a fee you can hire a variety of pedal types.

I have only rode the Ronda route and a couple of others that climb straight out of Elviria so won't pretend to know that much about the area. If you get to ride alone have a crack at all or part of the Ronda climb, It's spectacular. I haven't descended it but that must be fantastic too!

I thought I would give a heads up about CO2 cartridges and Malaga airport. On my way back through Malaga my bike box was x-rayd, as usual, and I was told to remove my CO2 cartridges. This is the first time out of five trips abroad that I have been asked to remove them.

The CAA say you can take four and it looks like the EASA concur. Reading stuff on the web it's not uncommon for airports to have their own rules.

Sean Evo,did you get my reply to your pm about the.gpx?
