Any PH'ers living in Kent will be aware of the disaster zone that is the bottom end of the M20 from Maidstone Southwards and that final 6 mile blast of the A20 into Dover. Routinely Operation Stack is in operation because there is more than a Force 5 in the Channel or French trawlermen have argued with their wives and fancy blocking Calais port , HGVs in the outside lane doing 51 mph as they overtake their counterpart doing 50.5 mph in the inside lane and every other grey BMW 3 series has blue indicator bulbs for some reason.

So now salvation is at hand - courtesy of Kent Police and the Highways Agency we now have a traffic management scheme in place. On the 2 lane Southbound section of the A20 as it approaches Dover HGVs politely queue in the inside lane and then are traffic light controlled as they enter Dover itself. Brilliant stuff, the truckers cheerily wave us private motorists on as we breeze past their queue in our German uber barges and hungrily contemplate that Burger King dockside at Dover.

Or not...so the traffic control starts no less than 6 miles outside Dover and is policed by those lovely yellow 40mph average speed cameras and a couple of those funny silver Mercedes vans without a back window. Last week in perfect conditions I drove at about 42mph in the inside lane of a very quiet A20 whilst a Polish truck impressed me with its 24 spotlights and tried to wipe the parking sensors off my rear bumper. Various other trucks whipped past in the outside lane.

Just for a laugh and to relieve the boredom I phoned the Highways Agency helpline - so the nice lady told me it was a 3 month scheme that would speed transit times into Dover, improve traffic flow, reduce accidents and help prevent illegal immigrants from gaining entry into our fine country. It's so inspired that I've got no doubt that it will also help us find a cure for cancer...

Six miles at 40mph = 9 minutes
Six miles at 70mph = 5min 10sec

Oooh. A whole 3min 50sec late for some fast food and an hour wait for a boat! You _poor_ lamb.

I have learned how to steer with my knees in empty avg speed zones nothing else to do when stuck at such artificially low and pointless speeds, surrounded by .....nothing. No other cars, defo no 'workforce' to protect...it's truly soporific which is actually a way to increase the hazard level.

This scheme sounds totally pointless and just another way of increasing misery levels of UK citizens.

Here's an idea. An off button. IF the stupid cameras can help it can ONLY be when its busy (during the stack mentioned by OP). So the rest of the time turn the fkers off PLEASE!!!!!!

Burger King reference was a joke, you totally missed the point of the thread.

If you're a fan of arbitrary, pointless , heavily-policed and ill conceived speed limits then spend a day on the A20 in one of your 2 CVs, you'll love it.

The sensible decision is to never get to Dover in the first place. Eurotunnel all the way

You could always wazz up the A249 from Maidstone and use the M2/A2 instead.
