Had my heart set on F10 M5 as I have E60 M5 now. However I have been looking into the F80 M3 and I have seen a few in the flesh over the last couple of days.

To me the M3 has so much more presence than the M5. The shape is something else, and the Yas Marina blue wow!

Really don't know what to do now...

Space isn't an issue for me, 4 doors is so no M4 for me.

My biggest fear is going from a 500+ E60 M5 to a F80 M3.. As in the E60 M5 when not in full power mode you can really feel the difference. I've not driven the F80 M3 yet so I don't know how it will compare yet to the F10 M5 or my current E60 M5.

So at the moment I'm really torn between the two. I think the deciding factor will be once I've driven the M3. I have driven F10 M5 and wow I was impressed!

Exe60 M5 owner here. For general road use I think you'll find the M3 is quicker. The e60 engine 'magic' only really happened when you ring it's neck as I'm sure you know, the M3's torque and the fact that DCT is so much better than SMG2 should see you don't feel like you've lost a 100bhp. And of course you can get it 'tweaked' by Litchfield to get an easy 525bhp smile - Personally I think the M5/M6 has more presence than the M3 and I much prefer San Marino to Yas Marina! Have you driven the new M5 though? It really is stupid quick and into supercar velocity territory yes

The old V10's are flat below 3000rpm. However after 4000rpm they are ballistic and sound glorious too.

For people not used to that type of 'peaky power' they can often wonder what the fuss is all about especially in the lower rev band.

On a race track that is no problem as you are always high in the rev band. However around town, where a turbo petrol/diesel car needs 3rd gear to punch out of a corner in the V10 you need second for example.

When I first drove an E60 M5, I thought my 90bhp 1.9 Tdi Passat was quicker around town.....and then we got to the open road and it went like a monster!

I'd love that V10 in my life. I'd buy an F10 for that alone.

I will probably go either F80 M3 or F10 M5 after my E60 M5. The thing putting me off the F10 is the size, Don't really want to go bigger than the E60. Going from an M5 to M3 the interior might be a let down.

Doh! hehe

Sorry, I don't usually do modern stuff and I confused the E60.

I'm running an E92 presently and the V8 in that is glorious. Were I in the market for an M5 though, I'd still want the V10 version.

The F10 is oft derided for its size but I certainly wouldn't want mine to be any smaller from a comfort and practicality perspective. It also has a way of rather magically shrinking around you as big BMWs tend to. If you aren't so concerned about waft factor nor carting passengers around the F80 will of course by the more focussed car.

The F10 has presence in spades but its variable - pootle around sedately and it will blend in with everything else. Feed in some revs and it turns heads.

The E60 M5 V10 is amazing! It really really exceeded my expectations when I bought it. The sound, the velocity of the gear change which I love by the way! Everything just syncs nicely for me. I drove the F10 M5 it is no doubt more refined than the E60 the only thing I didn't like was that it wasnt as raw as the E60 if that makes sense.. apart from that I really enjoyed it.

Ideally I don't want to have to tweak any of the cars to get it to do what I want it to. I will be using it as a daily car around town and a few motorway trips here and there and the morning school run.

My E60 M5 only gets used on the weekends always brings a smile to my face when I drive it its never a dull journey..

One thing I will miss on the E60 is the Active Seats, I have really become fond of that feature. I cant see any options on the F10 or F80 M cars which offer anything similar. I know some people think its gimmicky but i like it so do the front passengers..

I think the ultimate decision will come down to testing the F80 M3 and the F10 M5 again.

The turbo 6 is naff compared to the V8......the M5 is just amazing.

You've been an M5 man, and you will almost certainly remain one after driving both cars.

Basically this I went test driving pretty much feeling certain I wanted an F80 M3, man was I wrong, compared to the M5 the M3 feels cheap and noisy. M5 all the way.

I've got a test drive booked in for the M3 on Sunday morning, let's see how that goes.. In all honesty you never really get a feel for a car in a test drive that much obviously the sales rep is with you so you need to control yourself as much as possible and at the same time you never know how you will feel living with it for at least a few days etc. They should offer weekend test drives like some of the top end garages do.

I test drove both and went for the M5. I preferred it to the M3 as it's definitely more comfortable, goes like stink and is more stealthy.
Both amazing cars though.

The M5 has it on power/V8 noise/interior/comfort but the M3/4 are much sharper to drive the M5 for me doesn't shrink around you and always feels a bit of a bruiser (which I like)

No bad choices but I couldn't get on with the engine note in the new M3

The M5 will tear the M3 apart.

In fact I would say that the power of the M5 has 'killed' other cars for me. It's such a brute. And oddly tactile for a two tonne monster.

It's going to have to go soon. It's making the Cerb feel less special and the incoming F430 just isn't anywhere near as quick.

As an only car the M5 is superb though.

The way an M5 accelerates from 80mph is quite startling.

In the right gear the way it gets to 80 is also pretty amazing yes

I do wonder when I change at some stage in the future what's a 'normal' car going to feel like frown

Sometimes but I find the TC intrudes constantly up to 80mph.
