Recently 5th gear has decided to take a holiday frown

It won't go in stationary with the engine off but will occasionally go while on the move. I'm guessing I either have a 5 gear that looks like Pauls did the other week or my snychro is shot. What I would like to do is borrow a box for a short period while I drop mine and repair and upgrade it. Does anyone have a spare box that they could lend me? Failing that has anyone got one that they would be willing to sell?

My 5th synchro has gone decidedly crunchy also. Can't help you but I'm in a similar situation! Seriously tempted to go sequential with mine. Have to see what time I have, which is none...!

I wanted to keep some originality so kept the box but all Quaif internals worth semi helical gears.

Slight whine but quite a nice noise, cost £2000 or so but should be much stronger.

I really can't imagine that even straight cut would add much noise to these cars. They are monstrously noisy..

I found a replacement box by putting a wanted post in the General TVR section on PH. There was another offer at the time, but it had straight cut 5th which I didn't want, it was also rather more expensive. I will email you details.

Before I drop my box and start to strip it does anyone have a feeling of what I might find?

The symptoms are that most of the time it won't go in (this includes when the engine is off sat on the drive). Occasionally it will go in and behaves normally. No noise, no grinding. It feels like the stick is not moving far enough, as if it is hitting something that is blocking the movement into gear.

I've heard a few suggestions and wondered which people felt was most likely.

The circlip on 5th can fall off/move
Syncro on 5th is trashed
5th gear itself is trashed
There is something preventing the stick moving (If the gearbox mounts were failing do you think this could happen?)

Thanks for the input as always. Oh, and I'm still on the look out for a loan box if anyone has one they are willing to let me borrow for a shortish period.

Reverse doesn't have synchro, so if it is more difficult to select 5th than reverse when engine is off, then I reckon this points to selector forks/pads. But I have extremely limited experience/knowledge, that is just a guess.
