I recently sold mine. 80,000 trouble free miles. Rapid. 28mpg. Great all weather handling.

You didn't mention age so how about the other ones that are normally listed alongside the legacy.

Breakdown cover
Ha!None of those float my boat so here a leftfield suggestion - Laguna GT 205. Megane Renaultsport's turbo petrol engine and the ride/handling balance to make an Octavia feel like a skip lorry. I tracked one once.
You'll still need the breakdown cover, though.

AMG something?
In the link for the RS6, which is this one, http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/a... there is one on there for £86,500. Exactly what calibre of performance car that started life over £80,000 can be bought for 5 grand? It will be a worn out, leaking, pile of scrap. A colleague bought a 56 plate 525i for £9,995 3 years ago and it wants weighing in, an utter heap of crap. Willy Nilly said:

Ohhhh. Fair point.

You know how a 6 cylinder BMW should purr like a content cat? Well imagine a Simca that's not had an oil change for 5 years. Most of the rear lights work. It spent several weeks at work parked over a pool of it's own coolant, chomps its way through batteries, the dash is lit up like Southend sea front and it's not taxed, insured or MOT'd. But it looks the part and the Polish driver can lord it around. How bad is that 525i then?

£5,000 budget eh?
AUDI S4 B5
You won't pick up an RS4 for this amount and I wouldn't even look at an RS6 at this price, let alone if you could find one.
From my understanding just change the turbos over to RS4 spec along with the downpipes and you have an RS4 in S4 clothing, well engine wise...
Legacy GTI or a Legacy Spec R?
Vectra VXR or a Saab 9-3 with the V6 is the basically the same as a VXR just with a better image.
Saab 9-5 Aero HOT, stage 3 which consists of a 3" downpipe and an uprated FPR then pop over to Karl and he'll give you M3 pace - In gear times at least.

The Subaru option is a no-brainer for me, £4k for a decent spec Legacy with only 70k on the clock is crazy cheap. On Autotrader petrol 5 series tourings in the same price bracket are all older and/or higher miles and they are very unlikely to as reliable.
Legacy is a good choice. I'd also consider an Impreza wagon- you'll get a good one for 5K.
Not a fan of black wheels but something along these lines
http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/s...
I principally agree although one sold last year for 5.5K that appeared sound, and some do change hands for 7.5ish which could be OK if you know what to look for. But it's a big risk and realistically, a 5-9K RS6 will potentially need 5K spending on it to bring it back up to spec. And even if you get a good one, maintenance is pretty high - e.g. a cambelt change books at about 9 hours of labour, in addition to the 300 quid ish for parts.
The message is, I think, if 5K is the OPs budget, he probably can't afford to run it unless you have the skills and space to maintain it properly. Otherwise, it'll have one major break which you'll reluctantly fix and then sell it on again. Perhaps drop the budget further and do shed motoring - my saab 9-5 aero hot was 1100 three years ago and still goes well. Keep on top of the servicing and minor bits - but one major break and we'll probably just replace it. Or at least, go for something less extreme than an RS6.
