i've recently bought a W140 S280 (1998) and I need to change the gear selector as the lever won't move across from D to 4 to allow manual selection of the gears.
Does anyone know if it is a common part? From what I can see they all had the same 5sp auto-box. I wondering if one taken out of say a S420 will fit?

I believe it is a standard part from C class to S class. The only variation is LHD/RHD. I managed to find a new one for my R129 SL. Disassembled the interior and fitted the new part before reassembling the interior. Only to find the last part, the selector cover plate didn't fit, as it was biased to the right (gear position nearer driver). All worked though, managed to find a replacement cover on German Ebay.

Thanks Niva. I've seen one at a breakers and they certainly look identical. I'll give it a punt.

This is not an uncommon fault. You do not need a whole new selector unit. Rather there is a little plastic pin in there which breaks off. My main dealer knew all about it. I would have thought a specialist would know, too. There are after market replacements made of metal available.

Thanks - I got a used selector for £60 and its with a trusted and capable garage so it should hopefully work out.
