2+2 and a slushbox, a very rare car indeed! If I wasn't already restoring a 2+2…

Im the fool who bought the car !!!
Gearbox threw all its oil out going on trailer, so im looking at what to put in its place - what engine/ gearbox should I put in ??
needs outriggers doing but ive got stainless steel to replace them with.
I've found mouse nests full of nuts in sills and a little nest on top of engine.
now removing all stinking carpet and dodcy wiring before removing body to do outriggers.
As part of deal I came away with leather seats, front and rear screen, new light motors and brackets, light pods so quite happy.
So I will be in the garage for the next few years,
Any ideas gratefully accepted as I cant decide which way to take car.

It's a piece of history and stunning to look at. Take your time and don't rush into anything. If it was mine I'd bide my time and try to accumulate the various parts required to put it back as original. There are loads of Ford engines and gearboxes out there that will no doubt pop up on eBay so make a shopping list of things you need and then slowly work through it as bargains become available. Most importantly if you are not sure of a technical issue or solution then ask. Good luck with it.

Rare car, i would keep it mainly original with just the best reasonable upgrades that add to the cars attraction.

Just because the box might be faulty doesn't mean you need to change the engine, surely?
If you do, then the obvious answer is another 2.8i V6 from the Mk 2 Granada or Capri... but pre-1985 engines weren't happy about unleaded petrol so a better bet might be a later XR4i engine. Don't know if the XR4i ever had an autobox but I'd be surprised if it wasn't an option, the issue would be in finding one.
You could also opt for the slightly later 2.9 from the Mk3 Granada but you'd need the engine management to go with it.
As said you could go for a manual box instead but the car was built as an auto, one of only a handful which must count in favour of its long-term value on originality terms. That said, to maintain that originality you'd need an early engine, so round in circles you go... maybe the best initial course would be to evaluate the existing gearbox and repair or replace until the car's back in driving condition and you can decide where to go from there.

Hi...Personally it depends what you are going to do with the car..If you want to keep it as original as is possible then finding a good company who can rebuild the unit without tearing off your arms and legs would be the way to go..Shouldn't cost more than £500.
The V6 cologne is a pretty tough old iron lump..The K-Jetronics has issues if not looked after but as said it depends what you are looking to do with the car...Its sounds like you are going for gold by saying about lifting the body off so you may as well get as much of the original car refurbished where possible.

Engine components are now available for the cologne at reasonable prices..A couple of years back pistons were unobtainable unless you went the Keith black route..Its a fair amount of work but the end result will be so rewarding..And you will be saving a slice of heritage British sports car motoring..smile
