Hi,

I've been looking for a L405 for a while and have found an ideal spec car at Romans International. They seem to have a good reputation and the car has 24 months of LR warranty left. Would you be confident buying a RR from an independent or should I stick with an established LR dealer given their propensity to throw up the odd problem?

Any advice welcome.

Romans are fine. This sort of thing is bread and butter for them. I'm more concerned when you have a car for sale which is so out of kilter with everything else on the forecourt.

A very apposite post!

They came back with a trade in value for my five year old mercedes e class estate that was low to say the least!

As I need a second car as run about (thinking golf) I may trade my car against this instead.

Thanks

Do you know if their pricing is on the high side? I viewed the RR and it is nice with a good spec, though it seems about £3-5k to expensive compared to franchised stock of a similar age/spec.

The salesman said they would not move on price by more than the cost of a 'tax disc'. Think I'll just wait and see for now.

Surely you can find one from the main dealer network?

Plenty of stock moving through, any main dealer will deliver to you wherever, and warranty / issues / etc can all be resolved at your local dealer.

I would never want to buy a car from anyone other than a main dealer, used or new. Just so much easier of an experience.

I've come to the same conclusion. I've looked at a couple outside the main dealer network and have given them a miss. With the issues that these can throw up its just not worth it!

As an aside has anyone bought a car like this sight unseen? i.e. paid a deposit for it and had it shipped to their nearest dealer? If you then find issues you're not happy with presumably they just re-fund the deposit?

They probably wouldn't do that unless your local dealer is in the same network of ownership as they are - e.g. both dealers are owned by Stratstone or whoever.

But if you take delivery of it, then after purchase you can take it to your local dealer to get the required work done and they guarantee to resolve any issues. Though of course it is easier to put a rush on work being done when they are waiting for your cheque to clear than after it's cleared... wink If it's not too far I'd just go there in person and make 100% sure you are happy then get them to deliver it once it's ready.

You have said you are looking for cars that still have 24 months manufacturer's warranty left - what can possibly be a risk? A main dealer would only give you 24 months too as all approved used Land Rovers now come with 24 months of warranty.

TBH if you bought a car from Roman's etc and had any issues you could take it to any approved Land Rover dealer who would repair the car for free as it's still under warranty?

Personally I think you are being over cautious.......

Sure, I see your point. However there is a level of comfort in taking it back to the approved dealer (2 miles away) who actually sold it to me if need be. Anyhow they are reasonably plentiful now so I just need to hold out for the colour / spec I'd like.

I've found a nice Vogue SE at a Stratstone dealership. They say they don't budge on price as they match everything in the area. Anyone have any experience with them?

Yes when I bought a Jaguar XKR - they were the most arrogant bunch of twits to deal with in the entire Jaguar dealership network. Guess it would be the same with the LR dealers too.

I was told "the price is £xxxxx please don't waste your time haggling as we won't even throw in the car tax; this is the price and you will need to pay tax too" We price check regularly blah blah blah..

I bought from another dealer - a week later they called back and asked if I wanted that car as it was reduced by £1000

WTF go figure......
