Fish and chip shop in Whitby
Discussion
Quite like The Fishermans Wife myself, which is up the Khyber Pass in Whitby.
My wife and I had a day out on the coast today, and visited the Magpie in Whitby for fish & chips. I must say that the fish was excellent and the chips were very good (although not quite as good as the fish). We got to their front door at about 20 to 12 and got a seat straight away, by mid-day it looked as if every seat was taken.
Not cheap though, cod and chips plus tea for 2 people came to £30, although that did include a tip.
We were going to do it properly and sit on the pier, but the weather was a bit too wet and windy for that.

Thought I would mention that based on this thread and another, older, thread with mixed reviews on eateries in Scarborough, I went to Trenchers yesterday for lunch.
At 1330 (Monday), we queued for no longer than ten minutes and had one medium and one small haddock with two cokes for £24. We both thought the fish was excellent; chips good too.
Recommended.

I know this thread is primarily concerning fish and chips but, as pointed out nothing like out of the paper sitting in the open air, prefer Trenchers, last time we had Magpie they were rank from takeaway. However if you want a decent sit down meal cooked by a proper chef as opposed to a fryer please go to Bridge Street and just up from the swing bridge to...

We were in Whitby on Sunday and the fish and chips smelt great, me and the kids were keen to get some.
However my wife who claims she doesn't like fish and chips, strangely likes them from Thompsons who have a take away and cafe in Stamford Bridge and a take away and restaurant on the side of the A64 near Sand Hutton. So we had to wait an hour and a half after leaving Whitby until we could get some, but they were very very nice.
If eating in Whitby I like Trenchers haddock and chips, having been to the Magpie on a few occasions I was always 'unlucky' getting the fish that was all batter, or seemed to have been cut on a bacon slicer.

Pretty much everyone else is going to recommend "The Magpie" (as featured on Rick Stein's TV programme a few years ago.)
I've never been in - having stood in a queue for an hour only to have them take a table of 4 from the queue behind us rather than take a smaller number of people from the head of the queue, I refuse to attempt to do business with them again.
My preference is Fusco's : http://www.whitbyfishandchips.com/

I would have been pissed at the experience of marshalla, but then I am aware of just how crammed you are in there. We were 3 on a table and how you're going to get a fourth on there was a bit of a mystery.
The food by far not the worst f&c ever, better than average by a long chalk, but definitely not the best. But the takeaway at street level, supposedly the same was terrible, definitely in the worst 20% ever experienced.
Problem is that extremely good f&c is as much about the experience and how hungry you are as the actual product. Best ever I've had were at Seamer near Scarborough. Going back under different circumstances nowhere near as good, barely average quality.

To be perfectly honest the fish and chips from our local shop taste just as good as any in Whitby that I have had.
This is it. I got to Murgetroyds in Yeadon (had one last night as it happens) and I've been to the the Magpie, and another in Whitby and I prefer Murgetroyds to both. 2 x chips, 1 x fish 1 x battered sausage and 2 x cokes was a £10, so not expensive either! And this fish is massive, as big as the special at the whetherby whaler down the road.Gassing Station | Yorkshire | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
