Hi all,

I'm driving down to the test day solo at the weekend, is it possible to pay for all the tolls en route automatically with a debit card? Pretty sure you can but it's been a couple of years since my last trip and I can't remember. I'm going from Calais on the quickest route.

Cheers,

Mike

Yeah you just stick it in each machine and it's does it all and spits it out again.

Yes, unless there is a problem with the machine not reading your chip correctly - which seems to be quite frequent with their equipment.

I always use my credit card, but have my debit handy as backup.

I have seen other people have problems with electronic purse type cards with POS machines generally.

I've found it to be very hit and miss. One toll both will take my debit card but the next one down the same autoroute won't.

Tolls aren't too bad so just grab some Euro before you go as a back-up.

Alex,

Sanef has been in the UK for several years. You can get a tag and be billed by them locally. See here:

https://www.saneftolling.co.uk/

I have had a tag from them for 5 years.

Hi Leaper, I'm aware of the UK site, but it requires a yearly subscription. The French site charges a one-off fee (€15) then €1.7 per month.

I pay Sanef €6 annual fee + €5 every month used (to a maximum of €10 in any year), which is still less than €1.7 per month!

+1 - I thought I'd worked it out as cheaper via the UK site, especially if you only go to France once or twice per year. I'm off down to the test day as well this w/end.

My péage transponder has a monthly charge of 2€ but only in the month you use it. There is the option of 1.25€per month as a frequent user.

https://www.bipandgo.com/souscription

It seems the English version is a bit like the old French one in that a refundable deposit is still required. Here they dropped that years back. However, the maximum charge is 10€r annum no matter how many times you use the autoroutes:-

. Setup costs

20€ refundable security deposit (no TVA)
10€ application fee (+TVA)

Summary: the tolls are the same cost that you would pay at the barrier. This new service simply allows you to use the automated lanes saving you time and reducing the hassle of manually paying tolls in euros.

ii. Subscription Fees
a refundable security deposit of 20€ (no TVA payable) for each Tag issued by Sanef ("Tag Deposit");
the annual management fee of 6€ + TVA payable in advance; and
a non-refundable application fee of 10€ + TVA.

Total up front fee of 39.20€ (including TVA) of which 20€ is refundable when you return the tag

iii. Monthly Active Service Fee

A monthly fee is payable for each calendar month that you actively use your tag in France but only up to a maximum of €10 in a single year i.e. if you purchase a tag in June and then use your tag in July and August, you will be charged €10 (€5 for July and €5 for August) but you will not be charged a monthly active service fee for the remaining months up to and including the following May. A new 12 month period would start in June.

iv. Toll Charges

All toll charges incurred.

All fees and tolls will be collected by direct debit in £GBP. (the exchange rate used in outlined in section 1.4 below)

I've had my Sanef tag for maybe 5 years. I'm an infrequent user, say 3-4 trips in France each year, and additionally friends and family borrow it sometimes too.

My "deal" is as follows:

€10 one off set up charge
€20 one off charge for the tag and its clip, refundable if/when the tag is returned
€6 annual charge whether the tag is used or not
€5 each month of actual use; no charge for months not used

plus the toll costs

plus conversion € to £.

All is invoiced on a monthly basis (when the tag is used) and is paid by direct debit.

I think this a reasonable price to pay for the convenience and speed, especially when the auto routes are very busy eg Le Mans time and French summer holidays July/August.

By the way, my local Italian restaurant owner who drives to/from Sicily each year in August and uses my tag for France has told me that it's possible to get a tag contract in the UK to use on Italy's toll roads but I do not know the UK contact.

One thing you will need is an arm extension, unless of course you are driving a left hand drive car.

Its easy when there are 2 people but going solo it is quite a reach, or you get out of your car and walk round, much to the annoyance of the locals.

A tip......albeit a small one.......if you have no tag.

If the queues are long, get in the lorry lane, most lorries have tags, if not then it may take a bit longer per transaction, but one lorry is worth about 3 cars.
Just a thought and nothing earth-shattering, but I used to do this when travelling solo through France & it can ease some queuing tension

For those of you travelling by tunnel and are interested in a Sanef tag there is a good deal to be had here.
