Hi all,

I viewed an 850 T5 last week, which I could pick up cheap (<£500) as the engine is tappy. The car has done 117k..

https://youtu.be/HsaKcuSQBTg

It runs smooth, but there is a ticking/tapping noise which I think may be related to the lifters/tappets. The seller says he has put a 'Wynns' type additive through the engine but I have no idea when or how hot he has got it since to run it though etc.

I plan to re-map whichever car I do find so it needs to be fairly strong and as this one has a fairly low mileage I'm wondering if its worth sorting.

Any thoughts?

Thanks, Max

Best to be careful with this one....

The 850 T5s had the weakest rods of all Volvo's 5 pot turbos and any spikes of boost over 16psi could bend them and the first sign of that is a light tapping noise, somewhat like tappets.

Thanks, I have become aware of the problem with the rods. What sort of power can they take? I'm wondering if I'm going for the wrong car!

Thread resurrection, but did you go for it in the end? I've looking for a nice T5...

Had a 850 T5 with 197k a couple of years ago, but it was on it's last legs and had been driven very hard over the years, so ended up being scrapped.

Had a lot of fun and that 5 cylinder engine was lovely..

Double the mile but a lot less (I.E. none) engine rattle..
