Am hoping for some advice on the above.

Over the last B/H weekend we had some gypsies take up "residence" in the field next to our house.

We have been in contact with the relevant authorities to get them moved but since they claim to own the land we're expecting a long fight.

With this in mind I've decided it's time to beef up our security, we have an alarm and windows locks etc already, but am thinking of getting CCTV for the outside of our house. Can anyone recommend a good and cost effective system. If possible I'd rather remove it once they've gone so not looking to spend a fortune.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Id just get dummies, if they are going rob you with visible cctv then they are going cover their faces anyway.

Thanks but I think they are totally pointless and won't make my wife feel any "safer". either.

Check land registry re land ownership. But it does take a while to catch up.

I use Y cam cameras, have 3, a mix of the cube and cube 1080, the cube 1080 has excellent picture quality, can get a number plate from 20 metres away

They can write to memory cards in them, I have an old desktop PC that I get them to save images and videos to when movement is detected between a set time

Not the cheapest home cameras, but well supported and good products.

You can also use an app on your phone to view them

I'm using, (along with a couple of workmates) Escam Brick cameras.

They're IP cameras, so work over the internet and you can set them to record onto a PC using software.

I use Blue Iris, which is a bit pricey, but it just works.

The cameras are £30 a pop.
The software is about the same.

You do need to have a PC on all the time to record, along with your broadband, and I don't know the feasibility of it.

ETA:

You can set them to motion detect and whatnot, and with 3.14 keys they may see the camera, and remove the card, whereas the cameras record remotely you've got a hard copy, unless they break in and steal the PC.

I would look at trail/hunting cameras. They need no wiring, run for a year on one set of batteries, trigger on movement and contain their own IR illumination.

Most importantly, the new ones will text/email you an alert with a picture when triggered. This to me is essential - you can immediately decide if the triggering event is a problem and it gives you a chance to call the police while it is going on.

They also maintain their second hand value well, so you should have no problems selling them on once you are finished with them.

A couple of Acorn Ltl-6210MM in key locations would be ideal.

In the meantime, I'd just ask a local farmer. They will likely be able tell you who owns the field, who owned it in the past, who has worked it etc.

The only negative is that they aren't a visual deterrent.. Otherwise I was in.

Why Pointless? Scumbags are either scared off by cameras or not bothered about being caught. If its the latter then they will still do whatever they intend to do. The only advantage is they might give you the satisfaction of getting the scumbag caught.

But you have still lost the piece of mind and security either way.

Good idea. Local farmer alerted to occupation suddenly decided that that field suddenly needed ploughing up!! With a bloody big tractor as well !!!

At work we use a brand called Foscam, the owners view the cameras from their phones. It records to NVR (with a computer hard drive inside) 24/7.

Was relatively cheap and easy enough to setup. http://foscam.uk.com

costco/screwfix do them and they are surprisingly good. the phone app is a great addition to the system.

And his bulldozer to help the tractor - and the bulldozer only ever moves when it's on fire, it's stubborn like that...

+1 - easy to install and don't listen to the numpties who cant install the aps, if you call Swann support they are very helpful and will get you on your way. Has run faultlessly on my phones for the last 18 months and everything works as it should. The PTZ cameras are great.

I have just had a camera system installed with sensors by the gates. If anyone crosses the gates then our mobiles are sent messages and we can also view the footage via our mobiles at any time and any where.

Not the cheapest but gives peace of mind
