I've decided to drop the gearbox and replace the clutch whilst the diff is out. Thanks to the information on this forum the gearbox came out without too much of a struggle although because of the weight it was done with some trepidation.
I have two questions that I hope you can help with :-

1) When dropping the gearbox the oil ran out of the rear oil seal, I take it this shouldn't happen so does anyone have any information about how to replace the oil seals, check and service the T9 gearbox?

2) The clutch slave didn't have a rubber cover over it, but when I helped a fellow TVR owner I'm almost certain their car had a cover to help protect it from the road dirt. Are these covers available and used on all S3's ?

Oil will run out with the propshaft removed.

Do you mean a little rubber cover where the pushrod goes into the slave cylinder or a big cover over where the arm comes out of the bell housing?

first one should come with new slave cylinder or repair kit, second one probably getting hard to find as they inevitably get tatty, split, oil soaked and lost over the years and were possibly never fitted from new as TVR used their own design hydraulic system rather than Ford cable operation (which the "boot" would have fitted)?

Many thanks for your quick response Mike.

In case others are considering any work on their Type 9 gearbox I found this very useful link which might be worth putting in the useful links wiki?

Good to know that the oil leaking past the rear oil seal is as a result of the prop shaft not being fitted. I'm tempted to replace all the oil seals whilst the box is on the floor so my next question is .... how easy is it to replace the three oil seals on these gearboxes and do you need any special tools?

I'm sure it was a rubber cover that fitted over the whole of the slave cylinder including the the release fork. But as you say it might not have been fitted to all S3's

I seem to remember seeing a picture of a cover over the gearbox opening (maybe in Steve Heath?)but I have yet to see one on a car. No doubt someone will come on with a picture but I really wouldn't worry about it.

Someone should have warned you that once the propshaft is out the back of the gearbox is 'open' and gear oil will come out. wink Not good if you are lying underneath coaxing the box out!! I got rid of that T shirt!!

As far as the gearbox oils seals are concerned, was there evidence of a leak before? If not I wouldnt bother. If there was a leak, make sure you know where it was coming from. The tiny leak on mine was from the original speedo drive unit.

Apologies for hi-jacking this thread but I am interested to learn about the speedo cable leak.

I have an S3 that I bought in February of this year and it does lose a small amount of oil - just a couple of drips from the front of the gearbox normally after a run out. The car has recently had a new speedo fitted and I wonder now whether the leak is associated with that rather than a failed oil seal. Whereabouts does the speedo cable fit into the gearbox?

As far as protecting the slave cylinder is concerned, the previous owner of my car had a cover fabricated to fit. I only have hard copy photographs, but will try and get it scanned to show you if it would help?

Not an ideal picture as I had to take a photo of the photo(if that makes sense!), but it should give you an idea.

Back end, near propshaft. At the front and you'd get some interesting "speeds" as you went up through the gears!

A fair point well made - I guess I was hoping for an easy fix but it looks likely to be a seal then,
