I'm shooting a plasticine stop motion animation short (my first) and one of the things on my to do list, is to find out a bit about model railway track.

From memory it's called gauge. I know nothing else about model railway. But wouldike help in choosing the bits that would suit me.

Not sure what software I'm using (will be an iPhone app) and stills will be captured on my iPhone.

What size track is largest/most stable, stable enough to support a flat bed style carriage, with the phone in a housing (which I'll make up to suit the carriage) so that I can smoothly move the camera around, on the flat as well as up and down a gradient.

The gradient might be a bit much, unless the track was considerably wide enough to be stable.

I'm after two short curved bits of track (in different directions) plus a straight bit.

What do I need to be googling and asking for in terms of track?
Where can I buy the track and a carriage cheaply and second hand?
And, dare I say it, in addition to the above, does anyone have any unwanted or broken bits which might suit my purpose that are for sale?

Many thanks in advance for any help!

I think that you are probably looking at G Gauge. The most prolific supplier is LGB http://www.lgb.com/en/ but they are not cheap (but their Toy Train and Starter sets are good value). On the flipside of them not being cheap they have a good resale value, so if you buy secondhand and sell on after the project you'll re-coup most of your money.

+1 for G gauge, +1 for LGB & +1 for the cost of it too. You might well find some Chinese sets on ebay that would do you just as well. Another alternative to consider would be the lego rail system, which at least gives you the advantage of being able to relatively easily custom build the camera car to suit your phone.

Superb advice , thanks, both of you.

Im drawn to the G gauge, possibly on account of perceived quality, plus I have found the bits of track I like the look of.

What I'm less sure of, is what the train element is called. What should I be looking for on eBay, what I ant is quite specific.

Preferably a low riding and short wheel base carriage. A 10cm carriage on a 30cm piece of track, gives 20 cm of movement from one end of the track to the other before the carriage falls off the rails.

Any suggestions on terminology - Ill be browsing eBay.co.uk
Thanks again for the great replies!

That looks pretty awesome!

Miniman, cheers for your link too.

I ordered some Lego track from overseas plus a flatbed style maintenance cart. Enough track that I can sell half and for both. Would never have thought of Lego, all help much appreciated, cheers guys.
