I have just bought a 2nd car from a private dealer a week back.
All seemed fine when we test drove the car but as we was leaving I tried plugging in my tomtom to the cigarette lighter port and it did not work.
I tried the tomtom car usb car charger in the port in the boot of the car and it worked without any issues....

The dealer checked this before we left and agreed to change it and to bring the car to him a week later for a repair....

Today I took it back to the dealer and he tried his own phone charger and it worked. The fact it worked and the actual lighting of the cigarette lighting part worked, he refused to replace it and said it functions as it should so therefore it is to do with my '3rd party' products....

I have tried other less demanding chargers and they do work but it seems anything that requires more power then a phone and it struggles such as the tomtom and iPad....

I think that there is a fault that is causing it not to charge the same way as the boot port.

Am I right to think there is a fault and require a repair, as pre agreed?

What year is the car it could be something to do with the cars Canbus Wiring, it's not a fault with the car as it's to do with the amount of Voltage is being sent there.

It is 2008 plate.
I would have thought it is a fault with the car as throughout put should be consistent as the one of the boot?

I've seen it before when fitting Xenons to a CLK the left hand side was 0.4 volts lower than the right which was enough for it not to trigger the Ballast & these were Factory Xenon headlights.

Do a Voltage check

Lighter can take a lot more current than any Ipad or Tomtom so "not enough power" is not an issue.

Lighter inserts are not all the same check that you have proper contact.

I recall reading that some cars have a higher amp rating on the accessory socket in the boot compared to the socket in the front of the car. However they will both be 12v so your tomtom charger should work in any socket, but if it tries to draw more current than the socket is rated for a fuse will blow.
In your case I cannot see what is wrong with the car except maybe some physical incompatibility between the socket and the charger.

So the cigarette lighter (I.e the bit that pushes in) works?

Therefore the socket works. It's your devices...

If that is the case, why does it work fine at the back boot port?
I will buy a new belkin car charger just to make sure tomorrow...

A boot mounted plug is a '12v power socket' and the one in the front is a 'cigarette lighter'

They're two different things.
