What's the point in spending £1000 on a dryer? Unless you're getting a matching washing machine...go for something "cheaper" at around £500.

Have a look at Bosch/Siemens and Miele if you're spending that amount.

You probably don't want to consider this but I bought a White Knight cheapo dryer and it is still going fine after 8 years with no maintenance required.

This one's perfect, low noise? Yep. Energy efficient? Yep. Durable? Yep

Sorry, couldn't resist. My sister's had a Bosch for 8+ years and it gets a fair bit of use from a family of 4 with no bother.
FWIW, I've bought 3 cheapo dryers (£150-ish) in the last 10 years. A tiny bit of pain to change them but they're all packaged roughly the same size so fit in the same hole in the utility room. Different ideas for all I suppose.

I'd say anything German will probably be ok.

I have a Bosch washer dryer, my second one, having replaced the first one after 12 years, can't complain about that.

The rest of my family, including 'extended' all have Miele :

My Uncles appliances are around 35 years old - still work (though in soft water area which helps greatly).
My sisters machines, as far as I know have never been replaced and they are about 16 years old now - and with 3 kids they are pretty much on constantly.
My mums washing machine and dishwasher lasted 18 years (hard water killed them eventually) with only very minor repairs in that time, and the tumble dryer was replaced a year or so later I think, so about 19 years.

Hopefully that is good enough info for you.

I think Miele are one of the few companies that haven't dropped their quality over the years.

Also, there is a make, which escapes me that is made by Miele, but branded differently, and a bit cheaper - my Mum has one of the fridge/ freezers as it was of a size that 'branded Miele' don't do - I'll ask her the 'make' when I speak with her next, as if they do dryers, it could be a way to go and spend a bit less.

Pm me, I've got a £1000 dryer hardly used, the drum is pure unobtanium, the white sheet steel is lacquered with specialist anti static paint to decrease ionification of clothes so they don't stick together and it not only dries your clothes it gives them extra bounce, which your missus will be well impressed with. Available in condensing or non condensing with part particle technology which actually sucks carbon dioxide from the ether and reduces your bills at the same time.

I have a 27 year old Miele - it's never even needed a belt, or motor brushes. Used to be my Mum's, and did all the drying for a family of 5.
Then she got a gas one fitted (freebie when she converted to gas from oil), and gave me the Miele. Still works a treat.

LG

They make the very efficient and silent maintenance free direct drive units with 10yr warranty.

Excellent bits of kit.

If you want silent tumble drying and a nice look, then a german is the way to go, on the other hand if you want something reliable, then normally aspirated Japanese or Korean is the way to go smile

More seriously we went through a similar thought process, and ended up with the Panasonic heat recovery jobbie - but it was completely pants. I mean really pants, so bad I sent 2 machines back.

Now we have a Samsung washer, and a Samsung dryer, each with a 5 yr warranty, and both perform faultlessly. The washer in particular delivers a superb wash.

Our current cheapy washer is LG too, and still fighting fit (which surprised me, as a lot of the online reviews for our model are horrendous).

I suppose my own machinery proves that cheap stuff can be good too... I just want the 'guaranteed' longevity this time around. The outlaws are using 25+ year old Miele stuff too, I suppose I should just get that.

Anyone with detailed knowledge know if there is any real difference between the £600 and the £1000+ Miele offerings, in terms of quality of the components etc?

My particular LG wasn't cheap, but their top end stuff has the best drive units. Was when I was buying anyway, last year.

I just scrapped an 8YO Miele a couple of months back - one of the condenser ones. Previously I'd hoovered fluff from every nook and cranny when the thermal fuse blew a few years back (and replaced the thermal fuse) but this time the main circuit board burned out - properly burned out.

In hindsight I should have stumped up £250 for Miele to try to fix it - it did a fantastic and relatively quick job of drying clothes - but I had it in too many pieces by the time I realised this. They would almost certainly have refunded my £250 and told me it was beyond economic repair, based on what I saw, so I probably only lost the £30 I spent on a secondhand board (which may or may not have been faulty too)

Fortunately we inherited a Miele washer/drier following a death in the family (not so fortunate for the dead uncle) so we use that now, but it's not as good at its job. I'm not rushing to replace the stand-alone drier as I suspect our electricity bills will benefit from the lack of convenience smile On top of that I genuinely couldn't work out what to buy frown

Miele make some superb products, although the quality is most certainly on the downhill slope, along with the customer service.

After speaking to one of their service guys, he said the companies direction and main focus is heading more towards commercial and industrial rather than domestic.

We have a current model Miele topish of the range heat pump tumble dryer and it works very well, although it doe take a fair bit longer to dry a normal sized load and it isnt that quiet. I was also told that he said with average use,we should see 10 years service. Not long really considering the cost.

I did however blag an extended warranty when i bought it.

We've had a Bosch condenser for 11 years & it still works great (probably jinxed it now). It's not as quiet as it was, but it just works.

Having previously slated Miele fot being overpriced, and not worth it, we recently inherited a Miele washer dryer. It really is fantastic. Way better dryer than previous Zanussi/John Lewis ones we've had.

I think you're thinking of Liebherr. I was told that they make fridges for Miele. They don't do washing machines or tumble driers though - just fridges and excavators (which seems a slightly bizarre range of products).

Anyway, if the experiences of my family are anything to go by, Miele is the way forward for tumble driers.
