Upgrade 350D to 7D

Loot is a limiting factor. Just want to take pictures, not worried about wifi (70d), flip screens (70d) not worried about taking videos and the new 7D MKII requiring more lootage, 7D MK I at quite reasonable prices second hand.

What am I doing wrong?

My lenses should fit, two EF-S, one ordinary zoom. Same memory card.

Nothing at all. The 7D is a great camera and while I have one of these and the 5D MK3, the 7D is still my 'go to' camera especially for motorsport as the cropped sensor gets me more length from my lenses.
Do it, you won't be disappointed.

Rightyho. Cannot help but think I have missed something. Existing lenses are the thing and the jump up from what I have had for nearly ten years should be interesting.

I was looking before the 7D MK II came out, the prices second hand on the MK I went down enough for me. I have compared the three (inc 70D) and whilst what the new ones have to offer are desirable, the bare bones is money and existing lenses.

But at the back of my mind I thought I might be missing something hence this question.

I checked the number of CR2 files and 16,000 or so I have taken. 20-40000 shutter actuations on a second hand is not so bad and there was one with 9,000 complete with original box. So, work finished for the day now, time to drool at MPB.

Massive improvement you will love it, and not so far off the new cameras, go for it

Well, it arrived today. Second hand. 9,000 odd shutter actuations which I do not know how to verify, but the next one had 20,000. So, getting this one there was no box but the strap and camera are almost mint (strap no sign of wear and still has the folded up bends). One slight mark on the rear screen. No other real signs of use.

Have do a comparison shot or three tomorrow but the camera sits well and still learning what is what. All the manuals and software are online so no worries over the box not with it. Battery was flat and I was going out so left it on charge and seems to be OK.

Physically larger and obviously heavier. Controls feel about right and easy to get at. View finder is way ahead of my 350, which I never really had any issues with. The rear screen is easier for me to see with my peepers going as they are.

Looking forward at getting this out and about.

There's a heap of customisation you can do on the controlls, depending on how and what you shoot.

Makes the 350d feel like a toy doesn't it

Also my 800 shots or so on the 350 has reduced to 280 odd for the 8GB card. Still fits my main bag and carry around bag, but just about for the latter.


Gonna need a new or two card and battery.

I have owned a 7D since 2011, great piece of kit.

they are bomb proof (see the dig rev video where they freeze it, drop it, set fire to it, shoot at it and it still works!) and can produce excellent photos.

Sods law I was looking again at the second hand ones and one came up with 1000 or so shutter actuations in excellent condition. And one now with its box and 5,100 or so shutter actuations. But then if I had waited for the best one I would never have dived in.

Must stop looking.

Apart from operator error, it seems it is unforgiving for under exposure, (operator error see other thread), I keep knocking the function wheel off its setting every now and then. Other than that, no gripes. The burst mode is mental. Bought myself a single 32gbit card, mistake I think, should have bought two 16's. Filled that 32 and three 8's at RIAT..... but have to be ruthless with the deletions. The burst mode took so many trying to get the Red Arrows crossing for example, there is a lot of superfluous to delete either side of the cross.

Found I get better results post processing using the Canon DPP, free from its web site, just enter the camera serial number. Save that as a TIFF then into PSE13, it is the software I have so that is what it will be.

DPP will not touch the 350D CR2 files, so guessing it will not do the 450D, the info is online.

Bought a second battery, aftermarket one (Ansmann). Seems to get good reviews, got that from Wex I think. Full day at RIAT and with two lens on stabiliser I run one battery down to the half way but swapped to the spare to be safe so they have a bit of oomph.

I need a new remote lead (the 350 is a different type), the IR remote is cheaper but needs to be in front though some reviews say there is a bit of leeway.

Used the video function a few times to film a window bird feeder, the result for that are superb.

With next day delivery it was £427, excellent+ condition, 22k shutter count and a 6month warranty.
