Hi all,

As above, tight budget currently restricts the choice to either Double Tree Ealing or Hilton Croydon. The Half board package at these hotels seems to represent very good value for money at these 2.

We’re taking our daughter to London for a few days and wondered which of those hotels is best, in terms of:

Comfort/food?
Distance to nearest underground into City of London and the ease of getting into London?
Area – nearby places (walking distance) to eat/drink/waste an hour or two?
Any safety concerns with regards to wandering about these areas?

We will be getting the train from Nottingham to our destination – it looks like Croydon is not as easy to get to by public transport, than Ealing.

Can’t really afford to pay any more than Ealing (the dearer of the 2) and would like to be as close to the centre as possible. If any of you know of any alternatives, please do share – all info will be gratefully received.

Many thanks,
Scott

I haven't stayed in ealing but I have Croydon. While getting to east croydon station is easy, fast and regular from Victoria you then need to get a taxi or a bus to the hotel so its not that convenient. As a hotel its OK showing its age a bit and a bit worn around the edges but it is a real Hilton so is a step up from a double tree although I'm sure the double tree will be more modern. The last time I stayed there was last year. The breakfast is pretty decent but I couldn't comment on the rest of the food.

If it doesn't have to be a hilton then look up the Croydon Park Hotel its directly opposite east croydon station so much more convenient. Whenever I've looked its always been about similar price to the Hilton.

Why Hilton?

Travelodge Stratford is a great budget place and handy for the city. There is a Staybridge suite here too which isn't bad.

If Croydon, the Doubletree is handy for East Croydon station 5min walk). Direct train into London Bridge in 15 mins. Croydon is a sthole though

Doesn't have to be, really. We don't get to go places often so it's a bit of a treat for my wife and daughter. Plus they have a half board option for £146 a night, which I thought was good VFM

I think I'll concentrate on other areas, then.

Thanks for the information - I'll have a look at the Travelodge you mentioned.

If you are coming to visit Central London, there are thousands of hotels in the centre that will be walking distance to the attractions. Why would you want to be stuck down in Croydon, especially as you're already heading down from the north.
You'd then have extra travel expenses from Croydon/Ealing into Central London. Check out Laterooms.com or the Holiday Inns or even Premier Inns. Lots of places for food if the hotel doesn't do half board.smile

We stayed in the Hilton facing Canary Wharf. Not bad but personally I'd say Novotel is better for similar money.
