So following on from my Mallorca mountain fun in the Caterham (well Dax ....)

I am looking for some fun roads in either Spain or Italy in August

I already have a route for Italy, that takes in (from Zurich) both Stelvia and Old Brenner pass but I'm now thinking about Spain as well.

So assuming I get the ferry to Spain, and need some beach for a couple of days and some Madrid, I've got 10 days

Suggestions ?

Spain.

Santander or Bilbao on the ferry. From there head for the Pyrenees for 4 days.

Then head south.

Miss Madrid ..... As Spanish cities go, it isn't that great.

So keep going driving for the day to Cordoba and an evening in a fine restaurant near and after viewing the fabulous Cathedral, there are plenty . If your lucky, the Cathedral gardens will be open after dusk, amazing lit water gardens.

After an overnight stop, head via the twisties to Ronda for lunch then on over the mountain roads to Conil De La Frontera by evening (still a very Spanish coastal town) for the vast beaches for a few days.

Check out this restaurant in Vejer de la Frontera, a reasonable taxi drive from Conil for an evening. http://jardin.lacasadelcalifa.com/ Fabulous and possibly (for my wife and I at least), one of the finest restaurants in the World, not expensive and quite hard to find.

Then on the last but one day, a slog north to Salamanca for the night before heading back to Santander via Riano and the Pictus De Europe if its a late ferry.

I loved Italy, but its just so busy in the north, and Spain has literally thousands upon thousands of miles of empty well tarmaced roads with beautiful scenery and great food. To me at least its a very special place.

But at the end of the day, wherever you go, I really hope you have a great trip smile

Ronda in Spain.
But I prefer Italy as a country.
