Hey guys

I'd appreciate some thoughts if anyone can help me out. I've been a forklift repair / maintenance engineer for 13 years, it's an ok job and has it's ups and downs. One of my customers had a job become available on the warehouse maintenance team, I decided to apply and have been successful. I used to do plant work before forklifts and have been visiting the customer for 10 years so know everyone there etc and am pleased to have got the position.

I haven't yet given notice that I'm leaving to my current employer however I think that they may well ask me what it would take to stay with them. Extra money is unlikely but I do currently have a work vehicle van which I've always considered as part of my wage. However for the van to be really useful I need a bigger one which is an option within the company, when my van was last replaced I did ask for a larger van but was refused. It does seem to be bit of a grey area how to get one as other engineers I spoke to said they just asked their boss and got one. I appreciate that no doubt there are budgets set and must be stuck to etc as the lease cost / diesel cost will be higher with a bigger van.

So if I say to my boss I'm considering a new career etc and IF he were to say what will it take for you to stay? How do you think I should try and go about getting what I want?

Failing that I will be perfectly happy to leave and take on the new job

All thoughts appreciated

Forget the bigger van for while.

Sit down some where quiet and make two lists, all the good things about each job.

Which ever job comes second make a list of things that would make it better than the first place.

If the current job come second, and if the boss asks the question.

Tell him the list of reasons the other offer is better and let him come up with a list of enhancements he is prepared to offer.

Ha woops lol

Thanks Martin4x4 for your reply, but the only thing I want is a big van. To be honest the new job is almost a no brainer as it's a considerable hike in basic salary and 10hrs less per week. But I'd have to buy a van for my racing and maintain it whereas currently all company vehicles are changed every 5 years with all costs covered under the lease.

So, let me get this straight:

You are seriously thinking of not taking up a job that has a day/week less time in it AND a huge pay rise???? Because of a van???

A day/week is an awful lot of van maintenance....

You could rent a van for when you need it out of your pay rise and still have lots extra and no ugly van clogging up your driveway and annoying the neighbours.

10 hours a week is worth an awful lot of van to my mind.

2 hours a day on a five day week is a fantastic gift.

The question you need to ask yourself is why you applied for the new job in the first place.

In my experience - once you have got to the stage of applying for jobs elsewhere - the writing's on the wall.

If I get to the stage of handing my notice in, it's highly likely that a couple of extra grand or a couple of sweeteners won't be able to fix whatever issues I have. I'd also question why, if the company are prepared to offer me something to stay, I wasn't getting it in the first place - I must be worth it for them to offer it.

If you have to threaten to leave every time you want a pay rise, promotion or some other perk - that's no way to run a career.
