Final group game just started.

England v Italy.

England win and they are in the semi-finals
England lose and we are out.
A draw will be enough so long as Sweden fail to beat Portugal

Good to see the U21s are continuing England's fine tradition of being absolute ste.

At least the women are still in their tournament, even got past the group stage.

And they came from behind to win a world cup knock out game in normal time, something the men have never achieved.

Yes. In fact, we've only ever come from behind to win a world cup knock out match twice, Cameroon in 90 and the 66 final v W Germany, and both went to extra time.

Not surprised the U21's went out as usual. I read a stat that Italy side although no-one had a full international cap the team had twice as many first team appearances in the Serie A compared to England.

Most of our players are either in the championship or warming the bench for premier league sides. Only Jenkinson, Ings, Kane and Stones play in the premiership.

When you dont take the best players then this is what happens.

But the best players are never going to be available for the qualifying matches, because they are in the full squad and the games clash with u/21 games. Or clubs won't release them for an u/21 qualifier.

So how is Southgate meant to motivate a squad of 20 odd players by carting them around Europe playing qualifiers when the squad know that if the qualify, 15 of them won't be going anyway because they've been usurped by the superstars!

Southgate played it right, brought in a couple of high profile players but mainly stuck with the players that got us there.

We overachieved anyway by reaching the finals. Only 8 teams made it and we aren't in the top 8 in Europe.

More cohesion in the structure of English football?

You graduate from one team to the next only when you've proven yourself.

And clubs are forced to release players for international duties or get penalised.

If players like Sterling, Wilshire, Barclay etc are in the senior squad, they can't be in the u/21s as the games clash. They can't be in 2 places at once.

It's not right to put together a squad of players and haul them around the arse end of Europe to qualify for a tournament they won't get to play in, because they will be replaced by players from the senior squad. Bad for moral of the squad when they arrive at the finals, will lead to resentment etc. Plus we wouldn't qualify anyway because the players' hearts wouldn't be in it, knowing they were just doing the donkey work for someone else.

Completely agree.

What needs changing is the "death by football" tactics, crabbing about getting the possession stats up.

Now you're talking. If a tournament is in a hot climate, then of course we have to rethink the way we play, but that aside, we should play to our strengths. We've never been great technically, but have always been fit. We should play PL style football, 100 mph, chasing every ball and generally being like soldier ants taking on a lion. Just wear the opposition down with stamina and dictate a furious pace to the game. Overrun them in midfield and give them no time on the ball. Let them adapt to us for a change.

As for possession, the ball is in your possession when you're picking it out of the back of your net and walking back to the centre circle!

Isn't this what we have tried for years though? There is no excuse for our players to not be as technically gifted as other countries, none whatsoever.

I think the only excuse is our culture. Kids in this country are not very interested in practicing skills, they just want to play matches. It's all the parents want to see also. I watch kids on the continent playing in the street, and they will be playing one on one, trying out different techniques. Or maybe trying to hit a tin can with the ball from 50m or similar. In England, they divide into 2 teams and just play a match. Completely different

I'm not sure how we've played for years, like a rabbit in the headlights mainly. Paralysed with fear of losing.

I'd quite like to see penalties on the national curriculum, along with maths and English! That should help us in future tournaments.
