Why would you ever want to get to work? This gives a great excuse. I could call in sick or say I've got a hangover and the boss would always give me a bit of sympathy because he'd just think I was too ashamed to admit I'd broken down.

In March I returned home (Switzerland) after a few years working in Asia.

I decided I would buy the cheapest car (running and in relatively good conditions) I could find online within a radius of 70km from my home.

Ended with a 1999 Peugeot 206 with approx 100k miles. It cost approx 450 Pounds. So far so good...touch wood ;-)

Ive only gone and purchased a pretty little 944 S2 from very nice 65 year old chap called Cliff, he's done all the mechanicals and its a very honest car, not concours, but very honest, all serviced, MOT'ed, £3k plus of recent work done lots of new stuff, brakes, tyres all round etc etc, he's suffering with his back hence the sale to me, luckily for me I got to him before weekend, he had several people wanting to place a deposit in his account before viewing!!

A great car. I almost regret cheaply selling my 944 Turbo to a good friend a couple of years ago!

he only sympathises because he realises that you're getting a bit old for climbing up chimneys

Not quite the cheap 2nd car, but should be fun!

Love your thinking, very nice car that will only increase in value which was one of my criteria, the other was to stick to a £5k budget, which I'm pleased to say that I did, previous owner has a documented insurance backed eval of £6995.
Happy daysbiggrin

This is my cheap daily hack to get me to work and back (only gets used for commute), 28 mile round trip. Paid 5000 notes for it a year ago with 3K miles on the clock, worth about the same today.

It's a RenaultSport Twingo 133 Cup (same chassis as the old Clio Cup I believe, just shorter overhangs on the body). Perfect for my usual route to/from work as some of the roads are quite narrow (I've bumped wing mirrors on a couple of occasions) so anything much wider would be a bit squeaky bum time.

Also quite amusing to drive as most other drivers see it like a C1, 107 or Aygo, but it will easily keep up with the average turbo diesel German rep mobile.

A 2005 Peugeot 307 S. 1.6. 4-speed automatic. 115,000 miles. Left side has been scraped the full length down a motorway barrier or similar.

Really enjoy it. Perfect antidote.

+1 for a Renault Megane Hot Hatch of any era but the current ones can be quite plush inside etc.

Above all it will confuse people.

W124 Mercedes. Cost me £880 off eBay 6 (nearly 7!) years ago and I've spent virtually nothing on it. Solid as a rock.
