For the last few mornings, and regularly for at least a few weeks, I have been having a strange and annoying issue with my passenger window in my DB9. When the door is opened for the first time that day, the window slowly lowers itself to fully opened, stopping very briefly perhaps every 0.5 seconds. Whilst the door is still open you can continue to hear the mechanism trying to lower itself, but when the door is closed this stops. It starts again when the door is opened.

The window can then not be raised for what seems like a random amount of time. Sometimes 1 minute, sometimes 2 minutes, sometimes longer (up to 20 mins).

And for the first time it's just happened at another time apart from morning.

Any ideas?

For anything window related, first try the window reset procedure here, can cure all manner of oddities.

That would be my first guess - low battery does strange things to electrics!

Failing that, a dodgy earth can be a common culprit for such problems….

I've tried the window reset procedure, and it doesn't work.

Unfortunately not so this could be the culprit. I've also just noticed (as it is dark) that the red light on the door (that can only usually be seen when the door is open) seems to be flashing even though the door is closed! Which points even more to the usual fun and games from the battery....

Edit: battery fully charged now but window still stuck down. I've not started it though as not sure neighbours would appreciate that at this time of night. So not sure a battery problem?

Despite being fully charged last night, battery is showing this morning as hardly charged. This battery is less than a year old. Is it possible it is faulty?

Yes.
But something could be draining it - do the interior lights all go off ~30 secs after locking for example.
Has it got a good earth?

Yes, the interior lights all turn off as they should do. I'm not really sure what you mean about "a good earth"?

I'm guessing it is possible to have a faulty new battery?

Was bought from my AM dealer.

If something is draining the battery, would that show up as being different to a faulty battery?

If the red light in the door isn't switching off all the time, it means the car doesn't realise the door is closed - not sure what the sensor is that determines it, but it could be something as simple as that causing the battery to drain, if it's not faulty.

Update: Left the charger on overnight, so no chance the battery wasnt fully charged (as indicated by the charger). Removed the charger, opened the passenger door, and window retreated in the to door as per normal. Extremely annoying!!

Any ideas?

The way it drops with a stutter every 0.5 seconds or so seems to almost indicate a safety mode or somthing similar. And you can hear the motor continuing to drop when the door is open, but not when it is closed.

Luckily on every occasion but one the window has started working again before i've had to park the car.......

I've been playing around with this, and it seems that the window starts to drop when I start to push the door handle rather than actually open the door. Normally when you push in the end of the handle the window does it's small drop, but on my passenger door it seems to do this, and then continues the same action until the window is fully down.

Does anyone know which part governs this?

It will likely be either the window regulator or window module. I was having window issues myself (different symptoms to yours but also related to not dropping properly as it should). Initially the regulator was replaced, which seemed to fix it for a bit, but then it still played up, so the module was also replaced (thankfully FOC after I insisted that the original diagnosis for which I paid a large sum hadn't been the correct one!). It now seems to be alright, but every now and then still doesn't drop when opening the door, but is fixed once a soft button reset is done. Very annoying isn't it!

Not sure which part actually governs the amount the door glass drops by but I have noticed (during numerous repairs to the outer door handle mechanism) that there is a plunger and a clear plastic cog-like-thingy (sorry don't know the correct name) linked to the dooor handle and these operate with the handle. The lock mechanism itself is controlled by a wire cable so presumably these have something to do with the window movement. Hope this helps.

Yes! It's things like this which make me question whether I'd buy another Aston. When it's working fine, it's the best thing since sliced bread. Best looking car around, great sound, great speed, almost perfect.....but too many annoying little issues.

Window wouldn't go back up today (typically it was pouring with rain) so new regulator on order. My local dealer said it could also be the module, but they have to check the regulator first. Should be covered by warranty (I had drivers side replaced under warranty earlier this year).

Erm, aren't the window modules on the DB9 supposed to be replaced in pairs (even if one not faulty)? Fairly sure I've read this elsewhere and when mine went I had both replaced
