Am I right in thinking that BMW's E30 is not only the best and most iconic BMW ever made, but could very possibly be the greatest car ever produced, period ?

No on both counts, but they were pretty good in their day.

Yes you are, as you're only expressing your opinion. Just don't expect everyone to agree with you.

This thread is dangerously close to trolling don't you think!?

...Nah, no way. An original M1 modified for endurance racing gets very close though. Imo.

The E30 M3 was okay, but little more.

IMO, the R34 Skyline is more iconic.

And, to me, the BMW 8 series is a more iconic design, as it befits the 80's when it was made better than the E30.

On a serious note, there is little this side of £100k that I desire more than one of the sixty two Alpina B6 3.5S

Really?
It may be much faster, but it's not really iconic. Only people who are into cars would think it was anything interesting and they're not good looking inside or out.

Not that I think the E30 3-Series is the most iconic or best car ever either. Not by a long way.

E28 M5 does it for me. The legendary M88 from the M1 and many other trick bits in an unassuming (at the time) E28 bodyshell. It really started the breed of the 'supersaloon' as we know it also.

The E30 looks like an old BMW (notwithstanding the M3) whereas the Skyline looks more of a sporty package, and seems to have more of a presence.

Depends who you ask - most "non-petrolheads" wouldn't know what an R-34 Skyline in, nor would they know an E30 BMW from an E46. The Jaguar E-Type and the Aston Martin DB5 are iconic because they're instantly recognisable. There are very few cars that fall into this category.

Most iconic BMW? I don't think there is one.

......Is not the new MX5 a 'sporty package' when compared with say a Blower Bentley worth about 3000,000 quid ?

......All fart and no substance, like say a Karmann ghia and the proportions are all wrong compared to many of its glorious Italian contemporaries. Only in my opinion of course.
