I just got around to putting the ex Griffith calipers and 260mm dia front disc setup on my S3. I NOW know that there are 53 mm deep discs and 58mm deep discs (which are what I need , rather than the shallower ones which are what I Have frown. )

It seems this will bring a potentially hot disc within just a couple of mm from the track rod end. Can anybody who has done this upgrade confirm this is the case, or am I missing something??
Cheers.

Mine are indeed 58mm

But you can't put a 53mm disc where a 58 should be, it won't be central in the caliper (apart from being close to track rod ends).

Thanks Mike.
And are your discs very close to the track rod end?
I'm getting some new discs today, hopefully.

Surely it'll be however close it was on an ABS equipped Sierra?

I've not looked at how close mine are but I will be under it measuring stuff tonight so I'll check.

Also, won't the disc 'offset' need to match the calliper carrier 'offset' so the disc and calliper line up.

I have noticed that the 279 and 283mm discs are both available in 59mm and 49mm 'offset' - well a 10mm difference - depending on which model Ford. Choosing the right 'offset' version would negate the need for spacers and or turning down of discs when doing the '887 / 888' calliper upgrade.

I know the above refers to a diferent set up and the OP is talking about the 'standard' Chimp/Grief set up.

It is clear now that I need the 58mm high disk. This means the caliper carrier fits correctly with the disk in the centre, without any spacers of course. Unfortunately, the SH set of griff/chim front discs were the 53mm high ones!
My concern was that the disk is very close to the track rod end, so I checked with the old (ie original 240mm disk, which is also 58mm high) and this showed how close it gets, though less problem because of the smaller diameter.

suddenly realised the steering arm is twisted, causing the track rod end to move over quite a lot. (Plenty of clearance at the the other side - should have checked that earlier - doh!)
So, problem solved once my local parts dealer bring the new disks this afternoon and I find a way to sort the upright out.

Thanks for your help folks.

Exactly what I found with mine, my calipers came from a Griff 500 that was being upgraded to silly sized brakes and the discs I was given with it were the wrong offset for an S smile

My S3C had a Grif 500 brake upgrade way before I got it, disc is 58 deep and clearance to track rod end is about 10mm (finger width) on both sides

I also looked at my spare set which as is off a Grif and those discs are also 58mm

Thanks Stewart. A good thread that one - loads of useful stuff on there!
Got the right disks now so just got to sort out the upright. A job for next weekend as I'm off to Goodwood early tomorrow biggrin

Definitely worth checking the disk depth before buying! I'll do it next time!
