Car tax bought a car whilst plate change was happening

Hi all been using this place for ages never registered.

Bought a Bmw way back in April went to collect the car and when I paid the guy he said the had had a private plate on it and the documents had been sent to the Dvla. He gave me a receipt and said he would forward the documents to me when he got them.

I taxed the car whilst I was at the showroom so I could take it home but I had to use the private reg to complete the process online.

Took 5 weeks for me to finally get the v5 and mot sent to me and they came in the previous owners name not the garage.

I sent the v5 to the Dvla as soon as I got them just over a week ago and for some reason I did a vehicle enquiry using the normal plate I bought the car with and it says it's untaxed.

Now I've paid the initial £20 for 2 weeks and then on the 1st of may I paid a double donger of £40 and now tax is due agin on the 1st July.

My direct debit has the private plate in the ref number,

My question is will I have to restart my car tax payments and end up going through the double payments again or can I just continue paying the £20?

Also what will the police do if it's showing untaxed?

Any help will be received gratefully I'm a little worried about this.
