Test driving one tomorrow. Man-maths suggesting I need a brand new car to deal with my 25 mile commute so I don't have to shell out excessive fuel costs on the Monaro (I know, I know - don't worry, its staying!)

Anyway, massive discounts available, decent residuals - 50mpg should be a reality, and £30 VED for what its worth. 0-60 in circa 6 seconds makes it no slouch but I know it will be no boxster... New fangled 9 speed slush box should be perfect for the job and i reckon will suit the diesel motor well.

It will be a commuting tool that happens to serve my convertible itch. Granted I may also look like a tool in said tool!

Opinions?

My mother runs one for similar purposes. It has been flawless. I think 50mpg is a bit optimistic but even so, it is a very cheap car to run. The quality of the thing seems high, too. It's just a bit dull and lifeless to drive. The engine is uninspirational. Soulless. But what a lot of car for the money, remarkable, really.

Do you live in a rural location? I ask because mice ate some of the wiring in my mother's. Not the car's fault.

Drove it today, was utterly impressed with it as a package, really not an exciting car but certainly quick enough, very refined, decent ride considering it was the AMG sport (S-line equiv!) version. Was offered a fantastic deal by a very decent salesman and was in a whisker of signing on the dotted line. Looking at the leasing alternative tho and it seems to work out a good chunk cheaper over the course of 24 months. Decisions!!

My mother (in-law) has just bought one and seems to represent the stereotypical owner in our part of the world!

It`s well made, good fun and good value (again, the car rather than Mrs Veloce`s mother), although seems to lack the "must have" factor for me. I suspect the really great lease deals with these have long since gone now. Everyone`s moving onto Golf R`s.....

No there are indeed some cracking lease deals. The SE version is £215 a month inc vat on a 9+23 deal at 10k miles, or the amg sport spec at £240/per month on the same terms...

I've got an SLK250cdi - It's the R172 with a 7-speed auto 'box.

Had it for two years and done around 45k miles in that time. Averages a respectable 45mpg on a ~35 miles motorway-and-traffic commute.

Comfortable, reliable, good looking. Very optimistic GFV on the PCP and it's going back in 2 weeks time in exchange for a C-class. Absolutely nothing in equity in it.

We have a 7 month old 350SLK. Just on 5000 miles. No faults, averaged 34mpg, will do 38 on a long run.

We tried the diesel and the two 4 cylinder petrol engine and chose the 350 because the difference in running cost at our mileage is worth it for the extra grunt.

It's the 7 speed which works very well but not impressive using the paddles. It won't let you change down twice in quick succession and is quite slow to change up.

I'm on my second one now - really like them. My commute is 34 miles each way and I see mid to high 60s mpg in the morning and mid to high 50s coming home. It's bonkers cheap on fuel for such a relatively quick car.

I'd have another but 3 on the bounce is a bit much, it's also a bit cramped for the OH (37 inch long inside leg) and we like camping - it's rubbish for that. So probably an E250 CDi AMG blah blah coupe next time.

Is nearly eight grand for a car you can't drive more than 10,000 miles a year and have to give away after two years and do exactly the same again and again, really good value?

Possibly compared to actually buying a car at full list price, selling it after two years and buying another at full list over and over, but who actually really does that?

Who buys new cars for list price and sells after 2 years? Maybe not many...

Who buys heavily discounted (drive the deal = ~£27k which is >£9k off list) and sell for the GFV (~£20k)? Probably a fair few...

That's the best case scenario, which means £7k of depreciation plus the interest on the deferred £20k balance @ 5.9% apr. Total cost buying it via PCP, even with such a massive discount, is in excess of £9000.

I'd've gone for the lease option but there are none left at the advertised price.....
