Discovery TD5 Automatic
Discussion
Just acquired the above automatic Discovery, with previous Discovery/cars being manual.
Still early stages, so left foot still searching for the clutch pedal, and driving mostly in the "D" gear.
Would appreciate advice, guidance on when to drive in gears "D", "1", "2" and "3", particularly between town driving and motorway driving, thanks.

Fellow TD5 Auto owner here.
In "normal" driving, just leave it in Drive; the only time you'd use 3,2,1 is if you're wanting to use engine braking when going downhill or if you're towing and don't want it to change above a certain gear. In high range, selecting "3" for example means the box will use 1,2 & 3 but not 4.
In high range, the MODE button activates "sport" mode. It supposedly holds lower gears for longer but on a standard TD5 the reality is it huffs, puffs and makes lots of noise without getting anywhere fast.
In low range (put the gearbox into neutral when switching between high & low), MODE activates manual mode. You can then lock the gearbox in a certain gear (1st, 2nd, 3rd & 'D' acts as 4th). Useful off-road. Also, if you have ACE, shifting into low range will disconnect the anti-roll bars for greater articulation.
One upgrade I'm planning on making is a heavy duty torque converter; apparently they make a huge difference (the standard one won't lock up until you're doing 50 mph).

Leave in D most of the time. I have had mine chipped which gives much better performance (It's chalk & cheese in comparison) and a number of gearbox upgrades (I now run with stronger C1/C2 clutch, planetary gearset and the A clutch from a ZF4HP24, and the larger torque converter also.
